Intentionalist School
MS 7306.08 · Practices and doctrines
The Intentionalist School is a prominent body of thought within the Department of Applied Metaphysics dedicated to the primacy of authorial intent and contextual meaning in the interpretation of Tower documents, most notably the Concordances. It stands in formal opposition to the Materialist and Literalist approaches to textual analysis.
Foundational Principles
Established on Floor 4,712 (the "Codicil Warren") in the aftermath of the Redundant Gate Debates, the Intentionalist School operates on several core axioms. The foremost is the Principle of Originating Consciousness: a text cannot be understood without reconstructing the specific intellectual and circumstantial pressures under which its author (or authors) operated. Consequently, Intentionalist scholarship focuses heavily on marginal notes, drafting histories, ink-analysis, and the biographical records of scribes, seeking the "directive impulse" behind every clause. A secondary, and more controversial, tenet is the Doctrine of Latent Coherence, which posits that any apparent contradiction between Concordances is a failure of the interpreter to grasp the unified, higher-order intention governing the Tower's entire administrative project.
Methodology and Practice
Intentionalist practice is document-intensive. A standard Intentionalist critique, known as an Intentional Reconstruction, involves creating a parallel document that annotates every phrase of a target Concordance with inferred authorial motives, supported by chains of circumstantial evidence. For example, Clause 891 of the Seventeenth Concordance, which mandates "bi-weekly dust audits in all tertiary stacks," is interpreted by Intentionalists not as a mere maintenance order, but as a coded response to the political ascendancy of the School of Humoral Cartography at the time of its drafting, intended to curtail their influence through bureaucratic burden. This methodology often brings it into conflict with the School of Procedural Purists, who view such reconstructions as speculative and operationally void.
Notable Disputes and the Paradox of Self-Application
The School's most enduring conflict is with the Materialist School, which holds that only the physical text and its immediate effects are real. The dispute crystallizes in the interpretation of Ordinance 55-Gamma, concerning the indexing of hypothetical beasts. Materialists index based on described physical attributes; Intentionalists demand cross-referencing with the scribe's known fears and dietary habits. A more complex philosophical challenge comes from the School of Applied Paradox, which critiques Intentionalism with the Paradox of Self-Application: if one must understand authorial intent to understand a text, what is the intent behind the foundational texts of Intentionalism itself, and does this not lead to an infinite regress of intent-seeking? The School's standard rebuttal, articulated in Annex D of their charter, is that their own foundational texts are "meta-intentional" and thus exempt from the rule they establish.
Influence and Subsidiary Movements
The Intentionalist School maintains significant, though often indirect, influence over several other scholarly bodies. The School of Predictive Curation synthesizes Intentionalist contextual analysis with Humoral Cartographic techniques to forecast likely areas of future doctrinal development. More directly, the School spawned the now-dissolved School of Particulars, which arose as a reactionary movement seeking to apply Intentionalist principles not to authors, but to individual objects within the Tower, attempting to divine the "intent" of a specific chair or inkwell. The School also engaged in a brief but intense rivalry with the Axiomatic School during the latter's nascent period, each accusing the other of foundational incoherence.
Current Status and Governance
Today, the Intentionalist School is headquartered in the West Scriptorium of Floor 9,022 ("The Implied Preface"). It governs itself through a rotating council of seven Senior Reconstructors, whose appointments are, per their own regulations, based on a unanimous reading of the "discernible intent" of the previous council. This process has led to seventeen consecutive deadlocks, each resolved by the invocation of a different, often contradictory, precedent from their own records—a situation they describe not as failure, but as a "living demonstration of interpretive depth." The School remains a required course of study for all provisional librarians in the Department of Applied Metaphysics, ensuring its doctrines continue to shape the Tower's administrative culture.
