Intentionalist

MS 0233.15 · Practices and doctrines

Intentionalist refers to a practitioner, adherent, or certified scholar of the Intentionalist School. The term is both a professional designation and a formal academic rank within the Department of Applied Metaphysics, carrying specific privileges and procedural obligations regarding the interpretation of Tower documents.

Definition and Rank

An Intentionalist is an individual who has been ratified by the school’s senior council, the Grey Convocation, and whose name is inscribed in the Intentionalist Roster maintained within the West Scriptorium on Floor 9,022 ('The Implied Preface'). The rank is distinct from being a student of the school's principles; certification requires a successful defense before the Convocation of a thesis demonstrating proficiency in the six hermeneutic motions, as outlined in Annex Γ of the Manual of Sequential Interpretation. Certified Intentionalists are granted a cobalt-blue sigil ring, the wearing of which is mandated for all official hermeneutic proceedings under Clause 17.08.44.

Procedural Authority

The primary function of an Intentionalist is to author or counter-sign Intentionalist Parsings. These are binding advisories that determine the operative meaning of a disputed text within the Tower’s administrative and juridical spheres. An Intentionalist’s parsing carries particular weight in instances of:

  • Apparent contradictions between the Concordances.
  • Ambiguities in the classification protocols of the Central Registry.
  • Determining the ontological status of an erroneously filed artifact, where the Filing of Intent is argued to supersede procedural error.

For example, an Intentionalist might argue that a manifestly incorrect shelf designation for a treatise on extinct avians, if filed with clear intent to catalogue "the concept of flightlessness," should result in the treatise’s relocation to a section on "negated properties" rather than its wholesale deaccession. This application of the Doctrine of Latent Coherence is a hallmark of Intentionalist practice.

Scholarly Disputes and Rivalry

The authority of the Intentionalist is formally contested by the Literalist and Materialist schools. The most persistent doctrinal conflict is with Materialists, who reject the primacy of unstated intent. A key point of contention revolves around the interpretation of Clause 199 (Beta), concerning the Manual Porterage of volatile epistemological constructs. Materialists insist the clause’s plain text prohibits all porterage without exception. Intentionalists, citing the legislative history of the clause redacted in Annex Ω, argue it was only intended to prevent porterage during periods of high Bibliostatic Pressure, a contextual nuance they deem foundational.

This rivalry extends to institutional functions. Intentionalists participate in the non-public commentary period for all proposed Central Codification Bulletins (CCBs), a privilege granted under the Fifth Concordance but routinely challenged by Materialist petitions for "transparent dialectic."

Notable Sub-Categories

Radical Intentionalist
Holds that authorial intent is not merely primary but the sole determinant of meaning, treating the text itself as a potentially flawed vessel. This view, while influential, is considered extreme and is often critiqued by Dialectical Archivists for undermining the stability of the written record.
Procedural Intentionalist
Focuses specifically on the intent behind administrative and filing actions, rather than literary or legislative texts. This branch is paramount in disputes within the Central Registry regarding mis-shelving and cross-referencing errors.
Concordant Intentionalist
Specializes in reconciling contradictory Concordances by constructing a meta-narrative of the Librarians' overarching, though never stated, governing philosophy.

Certification and Recusal

Intentionalist certification is for life, barring recusal for "egregious hermeneutic drift" as defined by the Custodian’s Board of Review. There are 247 currently certified Intentionalists, a number that has remained within a variance of ±12 for the last seven centuries, suggesting an informal quota maintained by the Grey Convocation. Upon certification, an Intentionalist cedes the right to perform Manual Porterage above Grade-3, a safety precaution instituted after the Incident at the Redundant Gate.

"The text is a signal, often dimmed by the imperfect medium of ink and vellum. The Intentionalist’s duty is not to worship the signal-fire, but to perceive the shape of the fuel that was meant to be burned." — From the First Principles of Hermeneutic Motion, attributed to the founders of the Intentionalist School.
