Custodian’s Manual
MS 2921.13 · Documents and ordinances
Custodian’s Manual is the comprehensive procedural codification for the physical and non-physical maintenance of all archived materials under the purview of the Custodian of the Stacks. It exists in multiple, simultaneous canonical editions, each bearing the same designation and publication date.
Compilation and Authority
The Manual’s first compilation was commissioned by the 89th Concordance in Y112 SCE, concurrent with the formal establishment of the Office of the Custodian. Its authority derives not from the Librarians, but from its own iterative process of amendment, a principle enshrined in its Preamble: “A manual that cannot be updated is a manual that has ceased to function.” Consequently, the Custodian’s Manual supersedes all prior departmental guidelines, save where those guidelines are explicitly incorporated by reference, as is the case with the Manual of Phantasmal Bookkeeping.
Physical and Ontological Structure
The Manual is bound in perpetually damp vellum, a condition regulated by Annex Γ. It is divided into nine Volumes, each addressing a core custodial domain (e.g., Volume III: Atmospheric & Luminal Controls; Volume VII: Handling of Ephemeral & Contingent Texts). Each Volume is further subdivided into Chapters, Procedures, and Annexes. Crucially, the Manual contains instructions for its own preservation, replication, and contradiction. Clause 14.7.2 of Volume I requires that “any amendment which creates a logical paradox with standing procedures must be accompanied by a supplementary annex detailing the protocol for navigating the resultant operational dissonance.”
This recursive nature is most evident in the treatment of Pluralist entries. As mandated by Annex Ω, all versions of a Pluralist catalogue entry must be preserved, requiring custodians to maintain divergent, mutually exclusive copies of the Manual itself to correctly process the materials in question.
Notable Annexes and Procedures
Several annexes have attained independent scholarly recognition for their complexity or peculiarity:
- Annex Ω (Pluralist Protocols): Governs the curation of materials that exist in multiple, equally valid states. Its most cited directive is the requirement to preserve all variant editions of an entry, necessitating parallel filing systems and, in three documented cases, the construction of auxiliary reading rooms that technically occupy the same coordinates.
- Annex Ψ (Silent Stacks): Details the non-procedures for the Somatic Stacks and other acoustically voided collections. It consists largely of descriptions of approved postures for custodians and permissible rates of blinking, as auditory or kinetic disturbance is considered a form of cataloguing error.
- Procedure 88-C (Sudden Topographical Inversion): A contingency plan for when a stack, shelf, or entire aisle spontaneously inverts its spatial relationship to the central stairwell. It prioritizes the securing of index cards over personnel, a point of quiet contention within the Office of the Custodian.
The Issue of Edition Coherence
A persistent scholarly debate concerns the coherence of the Manual across its simultaneous editions. The Formalist School, led by the commentators of Floor 1,002, argues that the multiple editions represent a single, hyper-layered text whose apparent contradictions resolve when viewed through the lens of the Structural Stress Theory. The Pluralist School, based primarily in the East Unbound Stacks, holds that each edition is authentically distinct, corresponding to a different custodial timeline or perceptual stratum. This debate is not academic; it directly impacts practical matters, such as which edition’s sigil-authorization matrix is valid for accessing the Manual of Acceptable Strain. The Office of the Custodian typically resolves such disputes by applying the edition physically closest to hand at the moment of decision, a practice informally sanctioned by a marginal gloss in Volume II.
Custodial Sigils and Access
Authority to amend or interpret the Manual is denoted by a system of wax-and-cord sigils described in Volume IX. The Custodian of the Stacks (the person) holds the primary sigil, but issuance of operational sigils to department heads is a routine function. The Manual itself is stored in a climate-controlled alcove off the main custodial offices on Floor 413, though the Custodian of the Stacks (the body) retains one of the concurrent keys required for the alcove’s inner gate, ensuring no single entity possesses unilateral access. Consultation of the Manual is mandatory before any interaction with materials classified under the Manual of Perceptual Hygiene or the Cataloguing Prerogative.
Related Documentation
The Custodian’s Manual is the central node in a vast network of subordinate and complementary texts. It directly incorporates by reference the Manual of Ingress, the Manual of Concrete Referents, and the Custodial Manual for Particulate Residue, Vol. IV. It exists in a state of continual negotiation with the various Manuals of Sequential Interpretation, and its protocols for handling residual meaning are often cross-referenced with the Manual of Latent Topography. Its ultimate purpose, as stated in its final clause (9.999.1), is “to ensure that the archive maintains itself, irrespective of the nature of that which is archived.”
