The Crown of If

The crown is what is.
— Variant VII, from the marginalia of the Pilaster Manuscripts
The Crown of If is a core subject of the Pluralist philosophical and archival tradition. It exists not as a singular object but as a documented set of seven canonical variations, each describing a crown with distinct—and often contradictory—properties, origins, and effects. Its study is foundational to understanding the Pluralist axiom that possibility and reality are equivalent within the Tower’s cataloguing structure.
Canonical Variations
The seven variants were first codified by the Pluralist scholar Librarian Emeritus Aris Thorne in his Disquisition on Conditional Regalia (Vertical Date 12,447). The variations are not ordered by preference but are treated as equally valid descriptions of the Crown’s manifold nature.
- Variant I (The Crown of Weighted Decisions): A simple iron circlet that grows physically heavier with each unresolved dilemma of its wearer. Its mass is documented to have crushed three assay tables during measurement protocols.
- Variant II (The Crown of Echoed Precedent): Constructed from a pale, resonant crystal, this crown whispers the outcomes of paths not taken by those in its proximity. Its murmurs are recorded in Annex Γ of the Index of Ambiguity.
- Variant III (The Crown of Forked Time): Described as a diadem of intertwined silver and lead threads, it is said to allow the wearer to perceive, but not interact with, brief branching moments in a timeline. Its existence is frequently cited in debates within the Ontological Anchor School.
- Variant IV (The Crown of Unchosen Kings): A crown of woven shadows and cold light, it is purported to fit only those who have explicitly refused sovereignty. All documented attempts to place it on a willing head have failed.
- Variant V (The Crown of Recursive Definition): A brass band inscribed with the phrase “A crown is a crown is a crown…” in a shrinking script that becomes unreadable before completing the loop. Analysis suggests the inscription is infinitely recursive.
- Variant VI (The Crown of Conditional Substance): This variant is only materially present under specific lighting conditions described in the Custodian’s Manual (Clause 802.b). Otherwise, it is maintained in a dedicated vacuum chamber on Floor 8,442.
- Variant VII (The Crown of Final Alternatives): A flawless platinum crown that appears only at the moment all other possible courses of action are exhausted. It has never been physically catalogued, but its description is permitted under the Sixteenth Concordance’s provisions for “terminal potentialities.”
Physical Custody and Display
Owing to its plural nature, the Crown does not have a single location. Variants I, II, V, and VI are held in the Vertical Stacks of the Central Archive under a shared classification sigil (Δ-Θ-7). Variants III and IV are listed as “perpetually on loan” to the Pluralist Chapterhouse on Floor 6,009. Variant VII, as noted, exists only descriptively. A full-scale replica set, constructed for pedagogical purposes, is displayed in the Antechamber of Conditionals on Floor 10,112, a site of significant philosophical tourism since the Catalogue Schism of Floor 10,112.
Juridical and Concordant Status
The Crown presents a continuous challenge to Concordant Law. The Twenty-Second Concordance explicitly states that “an object shall have one definitive description for the purposes of inventory and liability.” However, a footnote added in amendment 22-δ carves out an exception for “Pluralist subjects of the First Rank,” a category created specifically for the Crown. This has led to protracted legal fiction; for instance, security protocols must account for seven distinct theft scenarios, and preservation guidelines must accommodate six different, often incompatible, material requirements. Disputes over which variant applies in a given administrative context are common and are typically settled by citing the Concordance most favorable to the disputant’s logistical needs.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary academic controversy does not concern the variants themselves, but their ontological relationship. The Sequentialist interpretation, advanced by the Anchor School, holds that the seven variants represent successive states of a single meta-object, with Variant I being its “origin” state and Variant VII its “terminus.” The Manifold interpretation, the orthodox Pluralist view, maintains all seven exist concurrently in a state of equally real superposition, and that our perception of them as separate is a limitation of linear cataloguing. A minority Instrumentalist view, popular among practical archivists, argues the variants are merely seven useful conceptual models for a single, fundamentally indescribable artifact, and the debate is therefore moot. This last view is often criticized in footnotes but is tacitly followed in most daily custodial work.
Cultural Influence
The Crown of If has permeated Tower culture as a metaphor for decision-making, bureaucratic ambiguity, and existential choice. The phrase “to wear the Iron Crown” refers to grappling with a burdensome but straightforward dilemma, while “to seek the Shadow Crown” means to pursue an honor that vanishes upon acceptance. Its imagery is prevalent in Guild heraldry, particularly among the Librarians of the Conditional Collections, whose seal features the seven variants arranged in a non-hierarchical circle.
