Intent Certified Architects
MS 0098.66 · Practices and doctrines
An Intent-Certified Architect is a practitioner licensed by the Architects' Guild under the provisions of the Principle of Intentional Ascent to draft schematics for Intent Gates and other structural apertures. Certification is contingent upon demonstrated mastery of designing antinomies as integral structural counter-narratives, ensuring that any aperture or transition possesses a declared and verifiable Latent Intent that prevents casual passage or misinterpretation. The certification process is governed by the Annex of Architectural Intent, and its bearers are authorized to deploy non-canonical materials in compliance with the Principle.
Certification and Authority
The path to certification begins with a minimum of seven years' training in Conscious Architecture, followed by an intensive examination administered by the Guild's Refinery of Clarified Intent. Candidates must submit a portfolio of five aperture designs, each accompanied by a written Metrices of Intent documenting the structural narrative and its counter-narrative in triplicate. Successful candidates are inscribed into the Register of Docketed Intent and granted a seal permitting them to authorize schematics. Their authority is not unlimited; it is bounded by the Instrument-Specific Intent framework, meaning an architect certified for optical apertures may not, without further endorsement, design apertures calibrated for auditory or thermographic intent.
An Intent-Certified Architect's primary duty is to ensure that any transition between catalogued floors is not merely physically sound but intentionally opaque. As per Clause 1, "The structure shall follow the intent." Thus, a stairwell designed by such an architect does not simply connect Floor Ξ-447 to Floor Ξ-448; it embodies the specific intent of ascent under duress or descent into reconsideration, built into its riser height, balustrade texture, and the quality of shadows cast upon its steps.
Operational Parameters
In practice, the architect's work intersects with several Tower bodies. They are frequently called to accompany teams from the Central Registry during sealing ceremonies to certify the final intent-lock of a newly catalogued chamber. They may also be petitioned by private floor-holders to design "quiet apertures"—doors or passages whose intent is so minimal as to be nearly undetectable, a practice viewed with suspicion by the School of Literal Intent. Their schematics, once stamped and filed, become canonical documents that can be cited in Architects' Guild tribunals pertaining to structural integrity disputes.
A critical, and often contentious, aspect of their role involves the classification of Recursive Apertures. An aperture is designated Recursive if, upon inspection by a second licensed Guild surveyor, its internal boundary geometry manifests traits contradictory to those recorded in its original Metric. Only an Intent-Certified Architect who designed the original aperture, or one who has undergone Eidetic Recollection training, is permitted to re-enter and re-document such a space. This has led to the establishment of small, specialized firms, such as Chambers & Vectis, which hold a monopoly on re-certifying the Recursive stairwells between Floors Δ-12 ("The Annex of Unspoken Conclusions") and Θ-99 ("The Gallery of Repeated Mistakes").
Controversies and the Latency Doctrine
The most significant scholarly dispute surrounding Intent-Certified Architects concerns the doctrine of Latent Intent. The Foundation of Literal Intent argues that intent is fixed at the moment of the aperture's sealing and any subsequent phenomenological drift is a sign of flawed initial design. Conversely, the Seventh Reckoning of Intent posits that intent is inherently latent and unfolds temporally; an architect thus designs not a static object but a seed of narrative potential. This debate has practical repercussions: under the Literalist view, an architect could be held liable for a door that spontaneously develops a Subliminal Latch centuries after installation, while the Latent view would consider this a feature, not a flaw.
This doctrinal rift influences Guild policy. Since the Schism of Variable Intent, all architects seeking certification for optical systems must declare allegiance to one school or the other on their application, a requirement not imposed on other specializations. The Atmospheric Intent Meter readings in an architect's studio are also scrutinized differently; a high ambient Intent score is seen as evidence of creative vitality by Latentists, but as a contamination risk by Literalists.
Notable Precedents and Limitations
The legal purview of the Intent-Certified Architect is delineated by the Second Concordance, Annex B, which grants the Architects' Guild authority over "all structural transitions." However, several Librarian architects operate outside this framework, installing antinomies as purely administrative or conceptual features without formal schematics. The Guild's claim over these "soft apertures" is disputed and is the subject of an ongoing tribunal (Guild Docket Ξ-447-b).
Furthermore, certification does not confer authority over the Tower's vertical axis. The design of primary elevators, pneumatic descent tubes, or the theoretical "Absolute Stairs" remains the sole province of the Librarian architects themselves. An Intent-Certified Architect may design the lobby that contains such a feature, and the door that leads to it, but the central shaft itself is considered a pre-intentional void, a space where the Principle of Intentional Ascent is held to be suspended. Any architect found drafting schematics implying intent for such a void is subject to immediate decertification and consignment to the Antechamber of Lost Intent for re-evaluation.
