School of Literal Intent

MS 6950.07 · Practices and doctrines

School of Literal Intent refers to the formalized practice and philosophical discipline concerning the archival primacy of declared intent over all subsequent manifestations, actions, or interpretations of a subject. It is the direct administrative successor to the earlier School of Literal Adherence, though it is distinguished by its exclusive focus on the singular, constitutive moment of Filing of Intent. The School is most commonly associated with the procedural governance of Floor 2001: The Garden of Literal Meanings and maintains the authoritative indices for The Register of Docketed Intent.

Philosophical Tenets

The School’s doctrine is wholly predicated on The Foundation of Literal Intent, which posits that the reality of any subject within the Tower is fixed, immutable, and exhaustively defined by the intent recorded for it at the moment of its formal submission to the archives. This is often summarized in Clause 1: “Intent, once docketed, supersedes being.” The School rejects the interpretative methodologies of the Intentionalist School, which concerns itself with discerning latent motives, and the procedural complexities of the School of Literal Mechanics, which debates tolerances in physical manifestation. For the School of Literal Intent, there is no "latent" intent; there is only the text of the filing.

Its core principle, derived from the earlier Principle of Textual Immanence, is often termed the Doctrine of Constitutive Declaration. An entity’s properties, history, and even its potential for interaction with other holdings are not discovered but are instead created by the act of inscribing them into the intent docket. A chair filed with the intent "to be sat upon by three-legged beings" is, by definition, a chair for three-legged beings, regardless of its physical form upon manifestation.

Historical Development

The School formally coalesced in the wake of the schism within the School of Literal Adherence in Year 178, which gave rise to the Division of Procedural Adherence. While the parent school focused on broad compliance with textual ordinances, a faction led by Scribe Alara argued for a more radical, foundational approach. Alara’s treatise, On the Inaugural Moment, posited that adherence was secondary; the critical event was the initial declaration itself. This crystallized into the separate School of Literal Intent by Year 210.

Its ascendancy was cemented during the calibration crisis of the Western Atmospheric Spiral, where the School of Literal Mechanics’ debates over theoretical tolerances caused significant administrative paralysis. The School of Literal Intent resolved the dispute by consulting the original filing of intent for the Spiral, which specified a precise rate of ascent "for the purpose of conveying hymnals." The debate was declared irrelevant, as the Spiral’s literal reality was defined solely by its hymnal-conveyance function.

Procedural Practice

The School’s primary function is the administration and arbitration of the Filing of Intent. Scribes of the School are trained in a highly specialized lexicon to avoid ambiguities that could lead to latent interpretations. The filing form (Intent Docket A-7) is a complex document with 47 mandatory fields, including "Primary Ontological Purpose," "Permitted Interactions," and "Declared Incompatibilities."

Once a docket is sealed and entered into The Register of Docketed Intent, it becomes the unassailable reference for that subject. Any subsequent discrepancy between the subject’s behavior and its filed intent is not an error in the subject, but a fault in the observer’s understanding or a clerical error requiring a Formal Amendment Petition—a process so arduous it is seldom attempted. The School maintains that the famous "Weeping Staircase" on Floor 2001 does not, in fact, weep; its intent docket declares it "to provide a somber auditory ambiance," and thus the moisture observed by visitors is a categorical misperception.

Schisms and Criticisms

The School’s absolutism has generated several opposing factions. The School of Literal Recursion argues that if intent is paramount, then the intent behind the act of filing must also be considered, leading to an infinite regress the School dismisses as "meta-archival." More substantive is the criticism from the Society for Literal Concordance, which notes that the Tower’s Concordances themselves frequently contain contradictory intents, creating jurisdictional conflicts the School cannot resolve without appealing to a higher, non-intent-based authority—an appeal its own doctrine forbids.

Furthermore, the School of Literal Coherence contends that a universe of solely independent, declared intents leads to ontological chaos where logically incompatible subjects could be filed adjacently. The School of Literal Intent’s response is recorded in Concordance Addendum 744.2.c: "Coherence is an emergent property of proper filing, not a prerequisite for it."

Contemporary Role

Today, the School operates as the de facto arbitration body for disputes of classification and manifestation across the mid-Tower floors. Its scribes wear distinctive grey robes with a single crimson button, symbolizing the sealed docket. While its influence has waned on the more experimental lower floors and the doctrinal upper reaches, it remains the cornerstone of administrative practice for Floors 1001 through 2999. The annual "Re-affirmation of the Docket" ceremony, wherein a randomly selected intent filing is read aloud in its entirety, is considered a mandatory, if somnolent, event for accredited archivists.
