School of Literal Construction
MS 1380.82 · Guilds, orders and offices
The School of Literal Construction is an interpretive and curatorial tradition established on Floor 2001 in Year 43 of the Sixth Catalogue, dedicated to the physical instantiation of textual directives as stable, inhabitable architecture. Emerging from the more portraiture-focused School of Literal Adherence, it applies the Principle of Textual Immanence to dimensional space, holding that a properly parsed clause from a Concordance does not merely describe a potential form but inherently contains the specifications for its physical realization.
Foundational Tenets
The School’s central doctrine, as articulated in its foundational charter, The Edifice Codex (Annex Δ to On Literal Compliance), is that "the letter, when fully dimensionalized, begets its own enclosure." This extends the earlier work of the Adherence School from representational accuracy to structural necessity. Practitioners, known as Literalists or more formally as Edificers, argue that the spatial relationships implied by prepositions, the volumetric demands of nouns, and the sequential logic of procedural lists are not metaphorical but are latent architectural plans. A directive such as "the archive shall contain three interlocking chambers" is therefore seen not as a descriptive flourish but as a precise, enforceable building code, the correct interpretation of which yields a unique and stable physical structure.
Methodology and Practice
Literal Construction operates through a rigorous, four-phase methodology:
- Lexical Disassembly: The source text (typically a Concordance clause or sub-clause) is parsed to isolate all nouns, verbs of placement or containment, prepositions, and dimensional modifiers.
- Spatial Mapping: Each lexical component is assigned a notational equivalent in the Edificial Alphabet—a system of geometric primitives and relational operators developed by the School’s first Master Edificer, Scribe Alara.
- Manifestation: Using approved materials from the Tower’s Requisition Annex for Unquestioned Supplies, the mapped notation is physically constructed. The School maintains that if the mapping is correct, the structure will exhibit inherent stability, a property known as "declarative self-substantiation," a term originally coined by the parent School of Literal Adherence.
- Concordance Verification: The completed construction is measured against the original text by a panel of three unattested Librarians. Any discrepancy between the physical form and the textual description requires a return to Phase One.
The most famous example of their work is the Western Atmospheric Spiral on Floor 2001, a ventilatory structure built from a single, famously ambiguous sentence in the Seventh Concordance regarding "the helical passage of revised air." Its successful, if contentious, calibration was a primary catalyst for the schism that created the School of Literal Mechanics.
Schisms and Related Schools
The School’s history is marked by doctrinal fractures concerning the limits of literalism:
- School of Literal Mechanics
- Formed during the Western Atmospheric Spiral calibration crisis, this faction argues for the incorporation of theoretical tolerances and material properties into the interpretive process, a position the parent School rejected as introducing "extratextual variables."
- School of Literal Intent
- The School's direct administrative successor, which emerged in Year 178 following the "Schism of the Implied Load-Bearing Wall." The School of Literal Intent shifted focus from the purely syntactic to what it termed the "architectural intent" of a text, a move decried by orthodox Constructionists as a return to interpretative subjectivity.
- Division of Procedural Adherence
- A splinter group that broke away to focus exclusively on the literal construction of administrative and bureaucratic processes as physical machinery, an approach later formalized by the Proceduralist School.
Notable Constructions
Beyond the Western Atmospheric Spiral, the School is credited with (or held responsible for) several landmark features within the Tower:
- The Axiomatic Stair: A staircase on Floor 2001 built from the recursively nested definitions in the Axiomatic School's founding primer. It is theoretically endless but practically terminates at a blank wall after 147 steps, a point of ongoing scholarly debate.
- The Gallery of Literal Portraits: Originally a School of Literal Adherence project, the gallery's lighting and security systems were engineered by the Constructionists based on clauses concerning "illumination of record" and "perimeter of observance."
- The Foundation of Literal Intent: The subterranean vault that houses the School of Literal Intent's foundational documents. Its labyrinthine, citation-indexed layout was the final major project undertaken by the Constructionists before their administrative supersession.
Contemporary Status and Critique
Since the ascendancy of the School of Literal Intent, the School of Literal Construction operates as a deliberative body within the Society for Literal Concordance, primarily concerned with the maintenance and conservation of its existing edifices. It no longer initiates large-scale new constructions, a fact lamented by its remaining adherents as a "dimensional attenuation" of the Tower’s archival potential.
Primary criticism of the School, levied by the School of Literal Coherence and the School of Literal Recursion, is that its method is inherently limited to explicitly descriptive texts, failing to account for metaphorical, elliptical, or self-referential documents. The Constructionists counter that all such texts contain, upon sufficient analysis, a core of literal instruction pertaining to their own housing, a doctrine they term "the architecture of the meta-clause." This debate remains unresolved, as exemplified by the ongoing, century-long project to construct a suitable reading room for the Antechamber of Lost Intent based solely on the punctuation marks in its inventory.
