Provisional Architecture
MS 7919.18 · Practices and doctrines
Provisional Architecture refers to the specialized field and regulatory framework governing the design, authorization, and physical instantiation of spaces created to provisionally hold subjects whose ontological status is formally contested, indeterminate, or pending elevation under the Tower's cataloguing principles. It is the practical application of The Principle of Excluded Middling to physical space and is primarily administered under the auspices of the Librarians.
Origins and Regulatory Basis
The formal codification of Provisional Architecture is most famously contained within Clause 1 of the Seventeenth Provisional Protocols. The clause, whose core formulation is credited to Scribe-Provisional Aris, establishes the legal and procedural precedent for erecting structures that are "real enough to contain, yet impermanent enough to deny permanence." It serves as the mandatory procedural precursor to the enumeration of new floors under Clause 5. The expedited review of such architectural plans is further facilitated by Subclause Gamma of Concordance 23, which streamlines the authentication of material provisional subjects.
Defining Characteristics
Provisionally architectural spaces are defined by several key traits. Materials are often sourced from decommissioned index shelving or repurposed from disputed volumes, lending structures a distinctly heterogeneous and sometimes palimpsestic appearance. Load-bearing calculations frequently incorporate metaphysical tolerances, accounting for the potential weight of a subject's unresolved narrative or the pressure of competing attributions. Entrances and exits are designed according to principles of Aperture Architecture, often featuring transitional zones that comply with the Manual of Latent Topography to manage the subject's ingress and egress states.
Phases of Provisionality
- Phase 1: Scoping & Petition
- A holding Librarian submits a Provisional Protocol Summary (governed by the rigid internal architecture mandated by Concordance 712, Clause 4), outlining the subject's contested nature and the proposed spatial requirements for its arbitration.
- Phase 2: Latticework Erection
- The School of Intentional Architecture is commissioned to erect a framework of Intentional Scaffolding, which defines the space in potentia without committing to final walls.
- Phase 3: Materialization
- Using techniques from Affective Architecture and, in specific cases, Unquiet Architecture, the scaffold is infilled with substantive matter. The atmosphere, lighting, and acoustic properties are calibrated to the subject's specific ontological ambiguities.
- Phase 4: Occupancy & Arbitration
- The subject is installed, and the space becomes the arena for its formal evaluation. The architecture itself may be entered as evidence, with features like echoing corners or persistently damp patches cited in Librarian deliberations.
- Phase 5: Resolution
- Upon a final determination, the provisional architecture is either dissolved—its materials returned to the circulatory system of the Tower—or it undergoes a process of "hardening" to become a permanent component of The Tower's ontological architecture. A successfully hardened provisional space often retains telltale traces of its origin, such as faintly shifting floorplans or doors that only appear when needed.
Relation to Other Architectural Disciplines
Provisional Architecture exists in a complex dialogue with other Tower architectural practices. It is considered a sub-discipline of the broader field of Epistemic Architecture, which concerns itself with knowledge-structuring spaces. It draws upon the anticipatory principles of The Architecture of Unbuilt Rooms for its initial planning phases. Its focus on spaces shaped by unresolved narratives places it adjacent to, but distinct from, Conscious Architecture, which deals with spaces possessing or simulating awareness. Notable examples of its application include the organizational schema of the Gallery of Unwritten Prefaces and the structurally distinct Spire designed under Unquiet principles.
Scholarly Disputes
The primary doctrinal dispute concerns the endpoint of provisionality. The hardliners of the Bureau of Permanent Affairs argue, citing Annex 7 of the Seventh Concordance, that any space that successfully houses a subject for more than seven cataloguing cycles must be considered de facto permanent and is subject to full taxation and maintenance schedules. Conversely, the Adherents of the Perpetual Interim contend that the true purpose of Provisional Architecture is to create a permanent class of interstitial, ever-adapting spaces, and that "hardening" represents a failure of imaginative governance. This debate is often played out in the repurposing of Spandrel Voids, which are frequently claimed by both sides as ideal candidates for provisional projects.
