Indelible Grey (Series IX)
MS 2105.59 · Objects and instruments
Indelible Grey (Series IX) is a certified ink formulation, authorized under Ordinance 899.α for exclusive use by the Guild of Lapidaries in the permanent inscription of stone tablets within their designated precincts. Its chemical inertness and spectral neutrality make it the standard medium for recording judicial findings, foundational ordinances, and other perpetually-binding declarations where erasure or fading would constitute a procedural violation.
Formulation and Properties
Series IX is a colloidal suspension of micronized Ignorance Marble particulate within a stabilized aqueous medium derived from the Melancholy Estuary Series tributaries. The precise ratio is a Guild secret, maintained under Sub Folio 112 A722. The resulting ink is notable for its absolute lightfastness and resistance to all known chemical solvents approved for archival use. When applied to slate, basalt, or other approved lithic substrates, it bonds at a molecular level, becoming functionally part of the stone. Its chromatic quality is defined in the Guild's charter as "a grey of definitive finality, embodying the terminus of debate."
Certification and Usage Mandates
The use of Indelible Grey (Series IX) is mandated by several Concordances, most notably within the clauses governing the Grey Basin Transcripts and the inscribing of Judgement Panes. Its certification is distinct from, and supersedes, the provisions for colored inks such as the indelible violet used by the Archon for the Assumption of Merit or the cerulean mandated by Ordinance 4, Annex C for notarial seals. Application is restricted to Senior Lapidaries who have undergone the Rite of Unwavering Hand, conducted in the Cobbled Courtyard on Floor 48-A.
The Aperture Omega Disputation
The ink's philosophical status was a central point of contention during the Grey Niche debates at Aperture Omega. The Numerative scribes, led by Hieronimus of the Grey Stacks, argued that Series IX was not a mere pigment but the material instantiation of "positive nullity"—a permanent record of absence. Their opponents from the Late Imperial Chiaroscuro school contended that its lack of hue rendered it incapable of conveying meaning, a "shadow without an object to cast it." The debate was ultimately settled by precedent, not philosophy, with a citation from a superseded Edict of Precedence inscribed, appropriately, in Series IX upon a Judgement Pane.
Associated Holdings and Storage
Master vats of the ink are maintained in a climate-controlled annex on Floor 940, adjacent to Annex 12-C. Logbooks detailing each decanting are filed under Archive Series Gamma-7. Due to its conceptual potency, spent grinding tools and contaminated rags must be sealed in Ignorance Marble casks and interred within the Aviary of Indelible Ideas, per the Latency Clause of Ordinance 899.α. Samples for verification are catalogued in the Taxonomic Series 44.312.07, cross-referenced with the MAA-3 series of material audits.
Scholarly Divergence on Origin
While the Guild maintains the official formulation dates to the 4th Spiral of Cycle 120, independent analysis from the Grey Convocation suggests the base formula is far older. A faction within the Convocation cites anomalous corrosion patterns on the Whispering Stairwell balustrade as evidence of a "Series Null" precursor. This theory, largely detailed in marginalia within the Violet Tome, is disputed. The prevailing administrative view, noted in the Lobby of Resigned Acceptance log, is that the debate conflates the medium with the message; the stains on the stairwell are merely stains, their perceived significance an echo of the watcher, not the ink.
