Inkmixing Guild
MS 5189.92 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Inkmixing Guild is a registered craft-guild responsible for the formulation, standardization, and archival stability of all pigmented and non-pigmented writing, marking, and sealing fluids used within the Tower. Its authority is derived from Concordance 3, Annex VII, Clauses 12–29, "On the Permanence of the Record."
Jurisdiction and Guild Standards
The Guild’s primary mandate is the issuance and enforcement of ink specifications, known collectively as the Guild Standards for Fluid Media (GSFM). The most cited of these is GSFM-Δ-7, which defines the spectral absorption and temporal-fade resistance parameters for black registry ink. The Guild maintains an atelier on Floor 440, "The Vat," where all master batches are compounded under conditions of controlled humidity and particulate silence. Disputes regarding ink composition, such as the 22-year controversy over the inclusion of powdered aetherite in ceremonial reds, are adjudicated internally before any blend is ratified for wider use.
The Guild’s jurisdiction overlaps with, and is frequently contested by, the Papyrus Guild (substrate compatibility) and the Guild of Dormant Scribes (application techniques). A standing Memorandum of Understanding, MΔ12-GE-GTM, nominally governs the shared responsibility for ink viscosity testing between the Inkmixing Guild and the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics.
Notable Formulations
The Guild’s catalogue contains over 3,000 ratified formulations. Among the most historically significant are:
- Luminous Verdian: A green ink formulated to resonate with the specific frequency of Luminous Papyrus, allowing script to remain visible even when the substrate itself is not actively illuminated. Its patent is held jointly with the Papyrus Guild.
- Indelible Grey (Series IX): The only ink certified for use on stone tablets within the Guild of Lapidaries' precincts. Its binding agent is a trade secret, recorded in a sealed vault under Floor 440.
- Oneiric Blue: A controversial formulation, whose pigments are said to be sourced from "condensed narrative potential." Its use is restricted to the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild under Provisional Research Permit 4409, issued by the Curatorial Guild.
Organizational Structure
The Guild is divided into three Orders: the Order of Pigment (raw material acquisition and grinding), the Order of Vehicle (suspension medium preparation), and the Order of Confluence (final admixture and quality assurance). Advancement from one Order to the next requires a seven-year apprenticeship and the submission of an original, stable formula to the Guild’s review council. The current Master-Inkmixer is Elara Vex, who has held the position since the retirement of Master Corbin in the Year of the Still Vat (as per the Guild’s internal calendar).
Inter-Guild Relations
The Guild’s relationships with other major bodies are complex. Its alliance with the Horticultural Guild is strong, owing to the latter’s cultivation of chromatic lichens used in specialty inks, governed by Guild Standard 114 Delta 7b. Relations with the Guild of Exactitude are formally cordial but fraught, as the latter’s surveyors frequently dispute the colorimetric certifications issued by Inkmixing apprentices. The most significant ongoing dispute is with the Indexers Guild, centering on the Principle of Permanence versus Accessibility: the Indexers advocate for more fugitive inks to allow for palimpsest-style annotation, a proposal the Inkmixing Guild rejects as anathema to its foundational charter.
Scholarly Disputes
A central doctrinal rift exists within the Guild regarding the so-called "Axiom of Inevitable Degradation." The Traditionalist school, led by the Guild of Clockwork Purists, holds that any mark, no matter how well-formulated, must succumb to entropy over a sufficiently long timeline; therefore, the Guild’s duty is only to delay this inevitability. The Progressive school, influenced by the Guild of Resonant Masons, argues that a perfectly harmonic ink, in resonance with its substrate and the Tower’s own foundational frequencies, could achieve a state of "permanent potential" and never degrade. This debate is largely theoretical, as no such perfect resonance has been achieved, but it shapes research priorities and budget allocations within the Order of Confluence.
Recent Developments
Following the Soporific Spore Incident, which contaminated a batch of standard ledger ink and resulted in a week of unusually peaceful but unproductive clerical work across seven floors, the Guild has instituted stricter bio-aerosol monitoring in the main atelier. Current research, as noted in the Guild’s quarterly gazette, focuses on developing an ink capable of retaining legibility under the unique conditions of "temporal shear" reported by expeditions to the lower, unnamed floors.
