The Guild’s primary function is the theoretical and practical management of prolonged, non-standard scribal duties, most notably the supervision of records written in Sleeping Ink and the long-term maintenance of dormant archival systems.

Operational Doctrine

The Guild operates on the principle of “Intentional Latency,” where a scribal act is initiated but its completion—whether the drying of ink, the germination of a spore, or the resolution of a paradox—is deliberately deferred. Members undergo a rigorous seven-year preparatory cycle, culminating in the “Sealing Ceremony,” after which they are interred in one of fourteen designated Dormitory Vaults scattered across Floors 1,117 through 4,442. Their vital signs are monitored by the Guild of Theoretical Mechanics via a network of Aether-Crystals, and their official duty logs are updated biannually by the Indexers Guild.

Notable Engagements

The Guild’s most documented involvement was its petition to the Curatorial Council for the destruction of the Miletus Fragment in Year 738, which it supplied. The Fragment, described in their secondary addendum as “a damaged parchment scrap, bearing faded sigils consistent with early Spiral Notation,” was deemed a latent existential threat to coherent cataloguing. The petition was ultimately denied, and the Fragment was reclassified to a restricted sub-basement of Floor Ω.

More consequentially, the Guild was the principal supplier of the batch of Sleeping Ink implicated in the Soporific Spore Incident of Year 742. Analysis by the Guild of Exactitude later confirmed the ink contained a latent “Intent of Motion,” which activated upon contact with certain fungal propagules from the Horticultural Guild.
