Guild of Factotums
MS 9807.86 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Guild of Factotums is a registered auxiliary guild responsible for the temporary performance of low- to mid-level administrative duties across multiple primary guilds during periods of staff shortfall, ritual observance, or archival emergency. Its authority, and the precise definition of its remit, are delineated in Second Concordance Annex 7, Clauses 12–28, and its subsequent 147 amendments.
The Guild maintains a central registry on Tower Floor 44 (the Hall of Provisional Mandates), where member Factotums are listed by certification tier and current assignment. A Factotum’s authority is derived not from guild seniority but from the specific, time-limited mandate issued by a petitioning guild, rendering their status both powerful within a narrow scope and inherently transient.
Operational Doctrine
The Guild operates on the Principle of Ephemeral Authority, as formalized in the Memorandum Delta12 Ge to Gtm. This principle holds that a Factotum’s power is most effective and least disruptive when it is understood to expire. A standard mandate lasts for one lunar cycle of the Tower’s interior chronometers, though extensions can be granted by joint approval of the petitioning guild’s superintendent and the Factotum Guild’s Duty Logkeeper. Their tasks are manifold but typically involve: reconciling cross-guild inventory discrepancies, overseeing the temporary sealing of a contested annex, acting as a neutral witness during inter-guild asset transfers, or managing the logistics of a guild’s annual silent contemplation period.
Notably, Factotums are often deployed to assume the duties of a Dormant Scribe during their mandatory decade of wakefulness, a practice that has led to several jurisdictional disputes with the Indexers Guild, which maintains the master duty logs for that guild.
Certification Tiers
Prospective Factotums undergo rigorous, if generic, training. The certification system comprises three tiers:
- Factotum-Third: Authorized for manual and clerical tasks only, such as ink-pot replenishment for the Inkmixing Guild or the hourly logging of lumen-moss growth rates as per Horticultural Guild Standard 114-Δ-7b.
- Factotum-Second: Permitted to validate mid-level forms, witness the exchange of sealed documents between guilds, and temporarily assume oversight of a minor scriptorium or bindery.
- Factotum-First: Empowered to enact provisional interpretations of Concordance clauses in the field, authorize emergency resource reallocations, and stand in for a guild’s Deputy Archivist during declared crises. A Factotum-First operating under a Curatorial Guild Provisional Research Permit famously authorized the use of a non-standard climbing apparatus during the investigation of the West Spiral’s 311th aperture.
Notable Disputes and Ambiguities
The Guild’s existence is a frequent subject of scholarly contention, primarily concerning its ontological status. The Guild of Theoretical Mechanics argues, in paper GTM/GE-Δ, that the Guild of Factotums is a purely procedural entity—a set of rules for role-fulfillment—rather than a corporeal guild with a permanent membership. This contrasts sharply with the view of the Guild of Exactitude, which insists the Guild’s registry on Floor 44 constitutes sufficient material proof of its reality.
More practical disputes arise from mandate overlap. A recurring conflict involves Factotums being hired by both the Guild of Resonant Masons and the Guild of Exactitude during acoustic surveys of new stairwells, leading to situations where a single individual is contractually obligated to uphold conflicting standards of harmonic measurement. These incidents are typically resolved by declaring the mandate void and the survey inconclusive.
The Soporific Spore Incident
The Guild’s operational resilience was tested during the Soporific Spore Incident, in which a routine delivery from the Horticultural Guild to the Guild of Dormant Scribes triggered a widespread, though harmless, lethargy among assigned scribes. With the Dormant Scribes incapacitated and the Indexers unable to access the relevant duty logs, a corps of twelve Factotum-Firsts was mobilized under emergency provisions of the Third Concordance. They successfully maintained essential record-keeping for 14 days by employing a simplified symbolic notation, later codified as ‘Provisional Script Gamma’. This event is cited by proponents as definitive proof of the Guild’s necessity.
Relationship with Other Guilds
The Guild of Factotums maintains a deliberately neutral stance in Inter-Guild Relations, as its business model requires it to be acceptable to all potential petitioners. It is, however, formally recognized as a subsidiary of the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild for purposes of disciplinary appeal, a classification the Factotums quietly resent as it implies a theoretical rather than practical foundation. Their interactions with the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the Guild of Formal Cartographers are minimal, as those bodies deal in domains considered largely unsuitable for temporary delegation. Tensions with the Senior Indexers' Guild persist over the archiving of expired mandates, which Indexers deem ephemeral and Factotums argue are crucial precedents.
The Guild’s motto, inscribed above the registry on Floor 44, is “We Serve The Function, Not The Form.” This encapsulates its philosophy of temporary, task-oriented authority, a philosophy that remains as vital and as perpetually questioned as the Tower’s own unresolved verticality.
