Scrivener’s Auxiliary is a professional accreditation granted to a subset of the Guild of Factotums for the specific purpose of managing and amending the Fifth Concordance. It was formally established by the Central Scriptorium in Year 812 of the Vertical Era, following the so-called "Parchment Crisis" which saw the temporary misplacement of several key sub-clauses relating to the dimensional tolerances of auxiliary shelving.

Scope and Function

The accreditation permits the holder—formally addressed as the Acting Scrivener’s Auxiliary—to perform three primary duties: the transcription of proposed amendments to the Fifth Concordance, the collation of marginal annotations (including those found in locations like the auxiliary scroll-case of Stairwell Zeta), and the maintenance of the amendment ledger for cross-reference with other Concordances. The role is purely procedural; the Auxiliary holds no authority to interpret, approve, or reject any amendment. This strict limitation was codified in the same 812 ordinance to prevent the "creeping adjudication" observed in earlier, less structured amendment processes.

Operationally, the Auxiliary works within a dedicated carrel on Floor 301, an environment selected for its acoustical dampening properties, which are deemed essential for minimizing transcriptional error. All materials, including ink, pumice, and blotting-sand, are supplied through a quarterly requisition process overseen by the Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder.

Certification and Oversight

Candidates for the accreditation must first hold a valid Factotum charter in good standing for a minimum of seven years. They must then pass the Dual Examinations: a practical test of script consistency under low-light conditions, and a theoretical test on the history and hierarchical relationship of the Concordances. Ongoing oversight is conducted through an annual review, where a randomly selected ten-page sample of the Auxiliary’s transcriptions from the preceding year is audited for deviations from Standard Scribal Form. Current Status

As of the last census (V.E. 1207), there are four accredited Scrivener’s Auxiliaries in active service. The role remains critical to the Tower’s administrative continuity, though proposals to merge its functions with those of the Junior Amendment Clerks of the Seventeenth Concordance are reviewed—and invariably tabled—every decade. The position’s enduring isolation, coupled with its precise yet narrow mandate, is often cited by career bureaucrats as the ideal model of Tower governance: a function of perfect utility, utterly devoid of influence.
