Quarrymens Guild
MS 4319.98 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Quarrymens Guild is the certified body responsible for the excavation, preparation, and provisioning of all dimensional stone, foundational substrates, and interstitial fill used in the structural maintenance and vertical expansion of The Tower. Its operations are primarily conducted within the confines of Aethelreds Quarry, from which its administrative oversight is derived, as per the Second Concordance, Annex D.
Organizational Structure and Governance
The Guild is organized into three primary Lodges: the Lodge of Deep Cuts (excavation), the Lodge of True Planes (dressing and finishing), and the Lodge of Burden (transport and logistics). Authority flows from the Master Quarryman, a position elected for a septennial term by the Council of Foremen. The Guild’s internal regulations, the Edicts of the Unyielding Stone, are considered subsidiary to the relevant Concordances, though frequent jurisdictional overlaps with the Architects' Guild have necessitated numerous Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild rulings.
Primary Responsibilities and Output
The Guild’s mandate extends beyond mere material supply. It is charged with the curation of "architectural memory," ensuring that stone for new construction or repair is psychometrically compatible with the adjacent existing masonry. This requires extensive archival work, cross-referencing quarry ledgers against the Indexers’ master logs of floor compositions. Their most notable outputs include Perimeter Blocks (for outer walls), Dreamstone (a slightly resonant material used in quiet rooms), and the controversially named "Forgotten Aggregate" used for infill in sealed chambers.
Inter-Guild Relations and Disputes
The Guild maintains a complex web of formal relationships. It is a signatory to the GTM/GE-Δ regarding the load-bearing tolerances of fantastical geometries. A long-standing and often tense correspondence exists with the Horticultural Guild over root damage to subterranean retaining walls, adjudicated under Guild Standard 114 Delta 7b. The Guild’s relationship with the Scrollwrights' Guild and the Binders Guild is purely transactional, though it was indirectly involved in the precedent set by Ruling 4491 concerning material liability for archival substrates.
The Question of Esoteric Excavation
A minor but persistent schism exists within the Lodge of Deep Cuts regarding the interpretation of its charter. The traditionalist "Bedrock" faction holds that the Guild should only quarry tangible, physically extant stone. The reformist "Vein-Seekers" argue that the charter’s phrase "all foundational substrates" includes the excavation and stabilization of theoretical, metaphorical, and oneiric geological formations. This faction often collaborates informally with the Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers and the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild. The Guild of Clockwork Purists has filed several amicus briefs against this practice, deeming it "mechanically unsound."
Notable Projects and Controversies
The Guild’s most famous undertaking was the provision of the "Silent Keystones" for the Guild of Dormant Scribes repository on Floor Ξ-7. More contentious was the "Shelfstone Scandal" of Cycle 11422, wherein a batch of marble destined for the Senior Indexers' Guild was found to be lightly annotated with palimpsest prayers from a non-existent sect. The ensuing investigation, which implicated a mid-level factor in the Inkmixing Guild, was ultimately dismissed on a technicality regarding the definition of "blank slate" in the Third Concordance, Clause 19.
Administrative Note: All procurement requests must be filed in triplicate on Guild-approved stone-dust paper, channeled through the Guild of Factotums, and must include a notarized attestation of non-existence for the intended application, per Concordance guidelines.
