Second Manifesto of the Interpretivist School

MS 1257.89 · Documents and ordinances

Second Manifesto of the Interpretivist School is a document presented before the Librarians' Convocation of 702.9.α and held in the scriptorium of Floor 1212, wherein the Interpretivist School set forth its principal objections to contemporaneous theories of inscription succession. It is counted among the foundational recensions of the Interpretivist School and is frequently cited in disputes concerning the Principle of Generative Ambiguity.

Provenance and Presentation

The manifesto was composed over the winter of Cycle 702 by the then-Factotum-Second of the Interpretivist School, Calhwen of the Lower Apertures, and was delivered to the Librarians' Convocation of 702.9.α on the ninth day of that convocation. The original vellum is stored in Annex Theta, though a certified recension resides at Floor 1212. Clause 3 of the Ninety-Second Concordance notes that "the Second Manifesto shall be read aloud at each Grey Convocation save where weather prohibits the ascent of the reader," a provision the Grey Convocation has interpreted as requiring a substitute lector stationed permanently on Floor 1212.

Disagreement persists as to whether the document superseded or merely amended the Manifesto of Intrinsic Verity. The Axiomatic School holds that the later text annulled the earlier; the Interpretivist School maintains the two are "concurrent responses to the one beneath." The Null Collective has filed a marginal note asserting both are "unfiled in spirit," referencing the The Unfiled Manifesto as precedent.

Doctrinal Contents

The manifesto's central argument is that every inscription in the Tower is a response to the inscription beneath it, a position later codified in the methodology of the Interpretivist School. It further defines the conditions under which a sympathetic conflict may be said to arise, drawing upon the treatise On Latent Premises (Cycle 42,987). The Dialogical School, a practice within the Interpretivist School, traces its attention to conversational gaps to Section IV of the manifesto, wherein silence between recensions is termed "the unwritten reply."

"No floor is isolated from the floor that bears it; the omission is itself the argument, and the gap the most legible clause."

— Second Manifesto of the Interpretivist School, Section II, recension of Floor 1212

The Purist Manifesto of Spiral 412 rejects this reading, claiming the manifesto conflates absence with intent. The Ontological School has observed that the manifesto's treatment of cause-and-effect anticipates the later claim that the Palimpsest of Omitted Causes proves governance to be retroactively curated.

The Contest of Authorship

In Cycle 711, the Proceduralist School disputed the manifesto's authority on the ground that it postdated the Manifesto of Unwavering Sequence, by which the Proceduralists had seceded from the Literalist School. The Pragmatic School arbitrated that the Second Manifesto governed only matters of interpretation, not procedure, a ruling encoded in Third Concordance Annex 4 but contradicted by Ninety-Second Concordance Clause 9, which extends its sway to "all concordant matters whatsoever."

A clerk of Annex Theta, Bevric of the North Steps, recorded in Cycle 734 a grievance that the manifesto's leaf had been misfiled beneath a staircase inventory for nineteen cycles, during which the Grey Convocation cited the inventory as authoritative. The error was rectified only after the Textual Purity office issued a sealing-order.

Scholarly Disagreement

The Interpretivist Schools produced expansive and often contradictory commentaries on the manifesto, which Second Interpretivist Concord Clause 1 aimed to curb upon formally establishing the Grey Convocation. The Axiomatic School contends the curb was ineffective; the Null Collective contends it was unnecessary. The Statement That Makes Itself True is occasionally invoked by the Ontological School to argue that the manifesto's existence satisfies its own claims, a position the Interpretivist School neither affirms nor denies.

Administrative Note

Visitors to the holdings of the Second Manifesto of the Interpretivist School on Floor 1212 are prohibited from carrying quills, as the scriptorium's dampness has twice caused inadvertent amendments to marginalia. The Factotum-Second is held liable for any such emendment under Ninety-Second Concordance Annex 7.
