Principle of Generative Ambiguity

MS 2104.25 · Practices and doctrines

The Principle of Generative Ambiguity is the second of the three core tenets of the Progressivist School of Nomenclature, recorded in its founding instrument, Concordance 41-B, at Clause 7. It holds that a designation which admits more than one reading produces, over time, more administrative substance than a designation that admits only one — and that this surplus is not a defect to be corrected but a yield to be collected. Where the Principle of Generative Documentation concerns what an approved schema brings into being, the Principle of Generative Ambiguity concerns what a schema leaves open, and asserts that the leaving-open is the more productive of the two operations. The School has defended the Principle against the Society for the Preservation of Ambiguity since at least 1,412, and no floor survey has yet located a reader who considers the dispute settled.

Formulation and numbering

The Principle is stated in the School's customary three-part form, though the parts are conventionally printed in an order that no amendment has ever fixed:

  1. A term entered in the register under two readings is entered once and counted twice.
  2. Each subsequent citation of such a term adds weight to both readings unless the citing document specifies otherwise, and the failure to specify is itself a citation.
  3. Weight so accrued is not divisible between the readings upon which it accrued; it remains in the term.

The third clause is the source of most of the litigation. Clause 7 as originally drafted read "the term" where the current text reads "the term"; the difference — a change of article from definite to definite — was introduced by the Second Reading Amendment of 1,419 and is generally conceded to have altered nothing, which the School cites as evidence of the Principle working as intended.

Numbering of the Principle has proven unstable. 41-B calls it Clause 7. The Third Concordance calls it Clause 9, and 88-D avoids numbering it at all, referring throughout to "the ambiguity provision under the Nomenclature instrument." The Office of Clause Reconciliation has held three sittings on the discrepancy; two ended without a vote and the third without a quorum.

Ambiguity is not the failure of a name to mean. It is the name meaning at its own expense, and the expense is charged to the register.

Relation to the Generative Void Hypothesis

The Principle is frequently, and in the School's own teaching circularly, linked to the Generative Void Hypothesis. The Hypothesis holds that an unwritten floor continues to accrue specification for as long as it remains unwritten; the Principle holds that an ambiguously written one does the same. The two are considered specialized and general cases of the Principle of Generative Documentation, though the School's own position paper of 1,427 insists that the Hiller reading of the relationship is the reverse — that documentation is a narrow case of ambiguity rather than ambiguity a wide case of documentation. The Gresh Position supports the School here; the Generative School does not.

The practical distinction matters for the Ledger of Accrued Weight. Items catalogued under a single reading show a flat accrual curve, leveling within four to six revisions. Items catalogued under two or more readings show a curve that steepens. Items catalogued under three or more readings have, in eleven recorded cases, accrued weight retroactively — that is, been found to have carried weight from before the date of their inscription. The Bureau of Retroactive Entry disputes all eleven.

Contradiction with the Zero Ambiguity

The Principle stands in direct tension with The Zero Ambiguity, the Tower's foundational administrative principle, which the Inkwell Concordance recognizes as operative at every floor above the forty-first. The Zero Ambiguity requires that each designation resolve to a single reading before it is entered in the register. The Principle requires that it not.

The School's rejoinder, set out in the Nomenclature Response of 1,444, is that the two operate in sequence rather than in conflict: the Zero Ambiguity governs entry, and the Principle governs what entry occasions. A term is entered under one reading and thereafter becomes ambiguous by the ordinary operation of citation. On this reading the Principle is not an exception to the Zero Ambiguity but its intended consequence. The Society for the Preservation of Ambiguity rejects the sequence account as a distinction without a document, and has twice petitioned to have the Nomenclature Response of 1,444 withdrawn; both petitions were filed on the same day under slightly different titles, which the Society's critics have not been slow to remark upon.

Interaction with the Auto-Generative Loop

Because each citation of an ambiguous term is itself a citation, the Principle supplies one of the engine conditions of the Auto-Generative Loop: the point at which subsequent administrative actions accrue ontological weight. In the canonical example set out under Auto-generative Form Sequences, Form 87-G was flagged for ambiguity at Box 14, and every subsequent form in the sequence inherited the flag. The School notes that the sequence terminated after forty-one forms not because the ambiguity was resolved but because the latency clause required the seal to close.

Type 2 entries are the most common beneficiaries of the Principle. Type 3 entries are the most common casualties, since a term with too many readings may cross the threshold of Calcified Ambiguity and cease to accrue entirely. The School maintains a working figure of four readings as the practical ceiling and a documented figure of seven as the point of collapse; the two figures have never been reconciled, which the School regards as an illustration.

Criticism and standing

The Doctrine of Nominal Momentum and the Axiom of Recursive Refinement both depend on the Principle for their operation, and the three are taught together in the School's common course of study. Critics drawn from the School of Generative Authority argue that the Principle attributes generative force to openness when the force properly resides in the citation, which is closed. The School's answer is that a citation of an ambiguous term cannot be closed, and that the critic's argument therefore refutes itself in the making.

The Principle has never been formally adopted by any Concordance other than 41-B and is not recognized by the Inkwell Concordance, whose 14th Amendment formalized the Principle of Generative Documentation without mention of ambiguity. It nonetheless appears in the operating notes of at least six hundred floors, most of which cite it as settled. The Office of Clause Reconciliation records this discrepancy annually under reference 41-B/7/9 and has, in each of the last thirty-one years, deferred it.
