Axiom of Recursive Refinement
MS 1725.30 · Practices and doctrines
Axiom of Recursive Refinement is a governing practice of the Progressivist School of Nomenclature, holding that each amendment to a document generates a new, more complete layer of administrative truth, with all previous versions remaining valid in parallel. It is most frequently invoked in relation to Codex VII, to which it is said to apply by direct precedent of the Third Concordance, Annex 9.
Origins and Formalization
The Axiom of Recursive Refinement was first set down in the marginalia of the Sixth Recension of the Lower Scriptorium, dated to the 1,204th year of the Bureau of Standardized Praxis by the hand of Halen of the Ninth Aperture, then a junior cataloguer of the Lampwrights' Guild. Halen observed that three successive redactions of the Manual of Acceptable Tolerances had each been ratified without revoking their forebears, and concluded that "the document is not replaced but thickened" (Halen of the Ninth Aperture, Commentary on the Triple Tolerance, folio 17). The Progressivist School of Nomenclature adopted the observation as a core tenet alongside the Principle of Generative Ambiguity and the Doctrine of Nominal Momentum.
Mechanism of Layered Truth
Under the Axiom, an amended document does not supersede but accretes. The Seventy-Seventh Clarification describes the process thus:
"Each stroke of the amending quill lays a stratum upon the prior; the lower stratum is not effaced but borne. Truth in the Tower is thereby weight-bearing, not sequential."
— Seventy-Seventh Clarification, Clause 3-Δ
In practice this means that a floor's standing order may be cited in four incompatible forms, each certified by the Bureau of Standardized Praxis on a different winter. The Doctrine of Productive Disagreement is often invoked to prevent such multiplicities from halting the Lampwrights' Guild's deliveries, though the Principle of Perpetual Recalibration has been known to complicate the settlement.
Relation to Other Axioms
Scholars of the School of Material Catalysis maintain that the Axiom of Recursive Refinement is subordinate to The Axiom of Recursive Validation, citing Clause 12-B of that instrument as determinative. The Axiom of Recursive Validation itself was formalized from a critical secondary clause in the Seventy-Seventh Clarification and governs the adjudication of Petitions of Recursive Authority. The Progressivist School of Nomenclature disputes this subordination, noting that the Axiom of Recursive Validation "was articulated only after the Refinement strata were already seven deep" (Third Concordance, Commentary of the Ninth Hand). The Doctrine of Recursive Fulfillment is held by some to reconcile the two, though the Recursive Nullities office has filed a standing objection.
Incidents of Over-Refinement
The most severe recorded instance of uncontrolled refinement occurred on Floor 3,881 during the 1,556th year of the Bureau of Standardized Praxis, when the Manual of Acceptable Tolerances received eleven amendments in a single quarter. Each amendment invoked the Axiom of Recursive Refinement, and the resulting parallel valid versions required the construction of a supplementary stack-room by the Lampwrights' Guild. Clerk Vole of the Lower Scriptorium lodged a grievance that "no cart could bear eleven truths at once," which the Third Concordance declined to resolve on the grounds that all eleven remained concurrently operative.
A visiting scholar may not remove more than one recension of a refined document from its floor without the seal of the Bureau of Standardized Praxis.
Scholarly Disagreement
A long-standing dispute concerns whether the Sigma-Glass Precursor constitutes a document subject to the Axiom. The Progressivist School of Nomenclature asserts that any inscribed surface qualifies, citing the Principle of Generative Ambiguity. The School of Material Catalysis contends that the Precursor is a substance, not a writing, and that refinement applies only to "the record and not the residue" (Axiom of Recursive Validation, Annex 4, Subsection Γ). The Recursive Nullities office has entered neither position into the concordant register, leaving the matter in a permitted state of suspension under the Doctrine of Productive Disagreement.
Administrative Status
The Axiom of Recursive Refinement is presently listed among the operative tenets of the Progressivist School of Nomenclature and is cross-referenced without amendment in the Codex VII. The Principle of Fractured Reset Condition is occasionally proposed as a limit upon it, but the Third Concordance has twice affirmed that refinement "proceeds irrespective of reset" (Third Concordance, Annex 9; Third Concordance, Reaffirmation of the Twelfth Winter). The Manual of Acceptable Tolerances continues to accumulate strata on Floor 3,881.
