The Axiom of Tangibility
MS 9502.92 · Practices and doctrines
The Axiom of Tangibility is the standing operative principle by which the solidity of any uncatalogued staircase, ledger, or person within the Tower is held to depend upon its inclusion in a recognised register of measurement. First set forth in the survey notes of Floor 314, the Axiom is presently administered in concert with the Custodians of Tangibility and is cited in preference to the Gradient of Tangibility wherever a dispute concerns objects of disputed manufacture.
Origins and Early Recension
The Axiom was distilled from the working papers subsequently designated ΓT-9, in which the Custodians of Tangibility recorded that the Blank Folio acquired weight only under active description. The Third Concordance established the Custodians under Article VII, and Amendment 12 thereof provided for "persons of disputed tangibility" following the folio's certification under Determination 88.2. The earliest recension, held in the Hall of Certain Weight, bears the seal of the Custodians of Pure Fact, who entered the final inscription over the objection of the Scriptorium of Vole's Axiom. A marginal note by Clerk Erum Vast, dated the 14th of the Long Winter, records that "the stair bore the cart only after the porter had spoken its number aloud, and ceased when he coughed" (Register of Conditional Tangibility, entry 4,411).
Relation to the Principle of Necessitated Tangibility
The Axiom is frequently confused with The Principle of Necessitated Tangibility, from which it is held to descend. The Principle emerged from proceedings concerning the Blank Folio and is invoked more often than any clause of the Third Concordance save Article VII. The Axiom, by contrast, governs not the fact of solidity but the transfer of solidity between registers. The Axiom of Documented Intent is cited by the Custodians of Pure Fact as subordinate authority where a transfer was not witnessed. Scholarly disagreement persists: the Axiom of Precedential Hierarchy suggests the Axiom yields to the Principle, while the Axiom of Recursive Validation holds that each re-inscription refreshes the Axiom independently of its source.
Administration and Observational Protocol
The Custodians of Tangibility maintain the Register of Conditional Tangibility, a ledger of entities whose solidity is contingent on specific observational protocols. The Axiom-Scope is the instrument appointed for measurement, and its readings are entered against the Axiom of Recorded Baseline. A person found between floors without an inscribed number is referred to the Custodians of Pure Fact for final determination. Visitors are reminded that objects in the Hall of Certain Weight must not be leaned upon between the hours of the second and third bell, as the oscillation interferes with the calibration of the Axiom-Scope.
Notable Disputes
In the 312th year of the Lower Recension, a quarrel arose between the Custodians of Tangibility and the Office of the Axiom of Administrative Containment over a staircase on Floor 314 that appeared only when descended. The Third Concordance was invoked by both parties; Article VII favoured the Custodians, while Annex 4 favoured the Office. The Axiom of Emergent Hierarchy was ultimately cited to defer the matter, and the staircase remains uncatalogued. The Variable Axiom was later offered as explanation by the Custodians of Pure Fact, who noted that "tangibility having been conditional, the condition having been lost, the stair retained its absence" (Register of Conditional Tangibility, supplement 12).
Contradictions Among the Concordances
The Third Concordance states that the Axiom supersedes the Gradient of Tangibility in all cases of provisional object. The Axiom of Unidirectional Time, synthesised from the Valen Axiom, appears to contradict this by requiring that tangibility once lost cannot be re-secured by later inscription. The Axiom of Recursive Refinement proposes a reconciliation by which each floor amends its own record without reference to the whole. The Custodians of Pure Fact have declined to rule, citing the Axiom of Inexhaustibility as barring final settlement where further floors remain unvisited.
