Custodians of Pure Fact

MS 5204.28 · Guilds, orders and offices

Custodians of Pure Fact are a senior order within the organizational schema of the Tower, responsible for the final validation and formal inscription of any statement elevated to the status of established Fact. They constitute the curatorial heart of the Verification system and are distinct from the investigative branches that produce Notices of Incongruent Fact.

Their duties are defined in Concordance VII, Annex δ, "On the Nature of Canonical Verity," which grants them exclusive authority to perform the rites of Fact Amended, Fact Reaffirmed, and Fact Consecrated. Their pronouncements, rendered in indelible ink upon vellum processed in the Silent Stacks, are considered epistemically terminal.

Constitution and Appointment

The Custodians of Pure Fact are not a fixed body. According to procedural canon, a panel of three Custodians is convened ad hoc for each singular Fact under consideration. The selection pool is drawn from the ranks of senior Custodians of the Stacks, the Administrative School's Dean of Ontological Consistency, and, in cases involving physical principles, a representative from the Custodians of the Central Spire. A Custodian serves for the duration of a single Fact's validation cycle, after which they return to their primary duties; records of who served on which panel are sealed for a period of fifty years within the Bureau of Latent Information.

The Validation Chamber

All proceedings are conducted in the Validation Chamber, located on the unnumbered interstitial floor between Stack Sector 451 and the Marginal Annex. The Chamber is a perfect cube, seven meters to a side, with walls lined in raw Forgotten Resin to nullify external conceptual interference. The only objects permitted inside are the proposed Fact document, the writing implements of the Custodians, and a single, suspended chronometer calibrated to Tower Mean Time. The principle of Fact 205 (causality) is considered inviolable within the Chamber, a condition verified before each session.

The Rite of Inscription

The validation process is a ritual of intense scrutiny. The proposed Fact is read aloud in its entirety. Each Custodian then performs a silent examination, assessing the statement for internal consistency, lack of contradiction with the extant body of Fact (accounting for any relevant Notices), and grammatical perfection. A Fact must be unanimously approved. Upon approval, the lead Custodian inscribes the statement into the Master Ledger using a pen tipped with a sliver of crystal from the Central Spire. The moment of inscription is recorded by the chronometer and becomes the Fact's official "moment of canonical truth."

Doctrinal Disputes and Limits of Authority

The Custodians' authority is vast but not absolute. A persistent scholarly dispute, referenced in Concordance XII, Clause 9, concerns whether the Custodians discover or create Fact through inscription. The Pro-Discovery School holds that a true Fact exists independently and the rite merely recognizes it, akin to cataloguing a book. The Pro-Creation School argues that the unanimous act of validated inscription is what confers reality upon the statement within the Tower's ontological framework. The Custodians themselves refuse commentary, citing the need for procedural neutrality.

Furthermore, their purview ends at the boundary of established Fact. They have no jurisdiction over holdings classified under Pure Speculation, theoretical models, or the contents of the Static Artifact repositories. Encroachment disputes between their need for absolute silence during rites and the maintenance schedules of the Custodians of the Aperture are common and are typically arbitrated by the Custodians of the Margin.

Notable Inscriptions

The Ledger records every Fact inscribed since the founding of the order. Some of the most frequently cited include:

  • Fact 001: "The Tower exists." (The foundational inscription; the panel for this Fact is not recorded.)
  • Fact 205: "All effects follow their causes in a linear, forward-temporal sequence." (Inscribed following 147 years of debate over paradoxical holdings in the lower stacks.)
  • Fact 451: "The air in the Central Pneumatic Stacks is of constant temperature (19°C ±0.1)." (A rare instance of a holding being elevated directly to Fact without a preceding Notice of Incongruent Fact, per special dispensation noted in Annex δ-2.)

The integrity of the Custodians of Pure Fact is considered the bedrock of the Tower's internal coherence. While their work is obscure and their deliberations secret, their outputs form the immutable lattice upon which all subsequent cataloguing depends.
