Mid-Spiral Textile Repository

MS 6796.22 · Places and structures

The Mid-Spiral Textile Repository is a specialized archival holding located within Spiral 44, Aperture Delta, spanning Floors 1,002–1,008. Its primary mandate, as defined in Concordance 727-C, Clause 12, is the curation, preservation, and cataloguing of non-functional textiles, specifically those associated with lapsed jurisdictions, unresolved petitions, and unacknowledged symbolic functions.

Jurisdiction and Scope

The Repository’s collection parameters are notoriously precise. A textile is eligible for accession if it meets one or more of the following criteria, as per Addendum 12-b to Concordance 727-C, Clause 12:

  • It served as the official standard or banner of a political entity whose existence is no longer recognized by the Central Registry.
  • It was submitted as evidence in a petition before the Librarians that was neither granted nor denied, resulting in a state of permanent procedural limbo.
  • Its intended symbolic meaning (e.g., mourning, triumph, territorial claim) was never formally acknowledged by any recognized authority within The Tower.
  • It is the product of a documented weaving error that was subsequently incorporated into the final design as a matter of bureaucratic necessity.

Notable holdings include the Silent Banner of the Whispering Galleries (Vestibule 4, Rack 22) and the complete set of Standardized Grievance Sashes from the Spiral Theta uprising of Epoch 7,422.

Cataloguing System

The Repository operates under the Selvage Decimal System, developed in-situ by Archivist-Scribe M. Selvage. This system classifies items not by fiber, weave, or era, but by the sentiment deemed to be residually embedded within the textile. Categories include: Grievance (SGV), Ambiguity (AMB), Lapsed Authority (LPA), and Ceremonial Neglect (CNG). Each accession is assigned a Selvage code, a storage coordinate, and a cross-reference to the relevant, often contradictory, Concordance clauses that justify its preservation.

Administrative oversight falls to the Department of Sentimental Residues, though their monthly inspections are frequently delayed by disputes over the sentimental categorization of new acquisitions. The Repository itself is considered a subsidiary holding of the larger administrative complex on Floor 2001, though no physical passage connects them.

Notable Disputes and Ambiguities

The Repository is a frequent site of procedural contention. The most famous ongoing debate concerns the "Weft of Contested Provenance" (Accession SGV-44.7), a length of damask submitted by the now-defunct Spiral 77-Gamma delegation. Concordance 727-C, Clause 12 mandates its preservation, while Concordance 12-A, Clause 3 implies it should have been returned to its point of origin. As no mechanism exists to resolve such inter-Concordance conflict, the textile remains, and the dispute is catalogued alongside it under AMB-01.1.

A further ambiguity lies in the Repository’s physical designation. While it occupies space within Spiral 44, Aperture Delta, its official administrative address is listed in the Registry as "Mid-Spiral," a term with no precise cartographic definition. This has led to several failed petitions to reclassify the holding under the jurisdiction of Floor 412 or Spiral 42, all rejected on the grounds that the ambiguity of its location is intrinsic to its function.

Access and Protocol

Direct researcher access is heavily restricted. Requests must be submitted on form DRS-44a and are subject to a mandatory 90-day deliberation period by the Department of Sentimental Residues. Approved researchers are escorted by a Junior Curator of Unacknowledged Sentiments and are permitted to view, but not touch, any textile whose Selvage classification does not include "Active Residual Melancholy" (ARM), a category deemed potentially destabilizing.

All reproductions, including sketches and verbal descriptions, must be filed in triplicate with the Annex for Provisional Documentation and are themselves subject to eventual cataloguing within the Repository, creating a recursive archival loop noted in the Partial Survey (Vol. 44, pp. 712–715).

Related Holdings

The Repository maintains formal cross-cataloguing agreements with several other collections. These include the archive of Eloise of the Unspooled Chain (for textiles associated with personal, rather than jurisdictional, ambiguities) and the specimen logs from Spiral 117, Aperture Gamma (which documents biological analogs to sentimental residue). It is also the secondary depository for all textiles mentioned, but not physically entered into evidence, in the unresolved addenda to the Third Concordance, which are primarily housed on Floor 303.
