Spiral 117 is a major administrative and archival complex located within the Tower, distinguished by its extensive network of Apertures. It serves as the primary operational and administrative nexus for the Clerks of the Spiral, a status formalized by the Tenth Concordance’s Annex Epsilon in 1911.

Architectural Layout and Notable Apertures

Spiral 117 is characterized by its radial design, with a central vertical shaft branching into multiple designated Apertures. Each Aperture serves a distinct bureaucratic or custodial function. The most significant of these are:

• Spiral 117, Aperture Gamma: The primary administrative seat of the Clerks of the Spiral, housing the Central Scriptorium and the Master Log of Amendments.
• Spiral 117, Aperture Beta: Contains the Central Registry of Codified Law and the archives for pre-1900 Concordance drafts.
• Spiral 117, Aperture Alpha: A restricted logistical hub for inter-spiral couriers, governed by Ordinance of Transit 44.
• Spiral 117, Aperture Delta (provisional): A disused aperture sealed following the Soporific Spore Incident of 1938 under Ordinance of Cessation 73-C.

Access between apertures is regulated by a system of Aperture Seals, which are maintained by the Clerks’ Office of Permissions.

Historical Development

Prior to 1911, the administrative functions of the Clerks of the Spiral were provisionally housed in Spiral 7-Gamma. The spiral’s designation, “117,” follows the Tower’s non-sequential numbering system and is not believed to correlate with its physical position relative to other spirals. Cartographic attempts to establish a correlation have been inconclusive.

Administrative Function

As the heart of Spiral-based governance, Spiral 117 is responsible for:

1. The ratification and archival of all amendments to the Concordances.
2. The oversight of inter-spiral transit permissions and aperture integrity.
3. The maintenance of the Master Log, which records all official designations, relocations, and sealings within the Tower’s spiral network.

Day-to-day operations are managed from Aperture Gamma, though significant jurisdictional disputes are often deferred to the quieter environs of Aperture Beta.

The Delta Aperture Controversy

A persistent scholarly dispute concerns the original purpose of the provisional “Aperture Delta” on Spiral 117. The official record states it was intended as a supplementary archive for obsolete spiral cartography. However, fragments of correspondence attributed to M. Selvage, a junior clerk stationed there in 1937, suggest it was briefly repurposed for an unauthorized study of “acoustic anomalies in adjacent void-space.” The Ordinance of Cessation 73-C that sealed the aperture following the Soporific Spore Incident makes no mention of this study, citing only “persistent bio-hazardous conditions.” Some historians, cross-referencing with the Miletus Fragment, argue the anomalies may have been related to early Spiral Notation experiments, though this remains speculative.

Relation to Other Spiral Hubs

Spiral 117 maintains a direct courier route to Spiral 44, Aperture Delta, which functions as a key logistical nexus on Floor 7,832. This route was established after The Incident of the Wandering Gallery demonstrated the need for a reliable channel between central administration and outlying spiral junctions. All official communication regarding spiral integrity, including reports on newly discovered annexes like Annex Ω, must be filed through Spiral 117 before broader dissemination.
