Realized Absence Guild
MS 9981.15 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Realized Absence Guild is the officially recognized regulatory body for the development, certification, and spatial management of Theoretical Blueprints. Chartered under the Seventh Concordance (Annex 17), the Guild operates on the principle that a meticulously ratified design possesses an intrinsic reality, or "facticity," independent of material instantiation.
Jurisdiction and Authority
The Guild's authority, derived from the Seventh Concordance and clarified by subsequent rulings from the Court of Unseen Precedents, extends to all ratified structures, mechanisms, and urban plans that exist solely within the Tower's archival and notarial systems. This includes, but is not limited to, bridges spanning uncrossable chasms, engines powered by unharnessable forces, and entire wings of the Tower documented as "under construction" for centuries. The Guild maintains a permanent liaison office within the Department of Sentimental Residues to coordinate the issuance of Certificate of Verified Absence documents for blueprints demonstrating significant conceptual mass.
Certification Process
To achieve certification, a Theoretical Blueprint must pass a three-stage review. First, it is examined for internal logical consistency and compliance with all relevant Concordances. Second, its "factual weight" is assessed using calibrated aesthesiometers to measure the perceptual pressure it exerts on adjacent archival space—a phenomenon formally categorized as bibliostatic pressure. Finally, a public notarization ceremony is held where the chief architect (or their designated proxy) swears an oath of non-construction before a quorum of Guild members. Upon successful completion, the blueprint is entered into the Register of Realized Structures and assigned a permanent archival address, at which point it is considered legally extant for all purposes of reference, taxation, and liability.
Spatial Management and Spirelocation
The Guild's most contentious duty is the management of spatial conflicts arising from realized absences. A certified blueprint, particularly one of great complexity or public acclaim, can generate volumetric inconsistencies in the Tower's fabric. The Guild employs specialists in spirelocation—a practice whose principles were first articulated in the paper Volumetric Inconsistencies in Cultivated Absence—to gently shift the perceived locations of nearby stairwells, reading rooms, and other realized structures to accommodate the new conceptual edifice. Disputes often arise with the Guild of Formal Cartographers, whose maps prioritize measurable geography over notarized facticity.
Notable Projects and Disputes
The Guild's registry includes several landmark projects. These include The Infinite Atrium of Unspoken Greetings (a social space documented as occupying the exact volumetric footprint of Floor 302, though visitors report only a slight thickening of the air), and The Engine of Conditional Melancholy (a propulsion system whose fuel is described as "the measured sigh following an unresolved debate"). The Guild's authority was challenged in the landmark case Re: The Silent Column, wherein the Custodians of the Silent Stacks argued that the Guild's certification of a "Whispering Gallery" in their sector constituted a breach of Clause 22 governing Consensual Absence. The Court of Unseen Precedents ultimately ruled in the Guild's favor, establishing that notarized acoustic features do not produce sound, only the potential for its appreciation.
Philosophical Divisions
Significant internal schisms exist within the Guild. The Cartesian Speculists hold that a realized absence achieves its purest form only when its construction is logically impossible, thus guaranteeing its integrity against future material compromise. Conversely, the Contradictors argue for a doctrine of "eventual habitation," maintaining that all certified blueprints are, in fact, subtle instructions for a future generation of builders, and that the Guild's true purpose is custodial, not archival. These debates are meticulously recorded in the Compendium of Unheeded Dissents, which is itself a certified Guild holding, stored in a realized vault whose lock responds only to a key that has never been drawn.
Inter-Guild Relations
The Guild maintains formal, if often strained, relations with several other Tower bodies. Its work with the Acoustic Dampening Guild on projects like The Quiet Forge is considered a model of interdisciplinary cooperation. Its relationship with the School of Negative Phenomena is more symbiotic, with the School often providing phenomenological analysis of newly realized structures. However, its ongoing feud with the Guild of Oneirometric Cartographers—who insist that all significant realized absences first manifest in the collective dream-log of adjacent floors—has resulted in seventeen separate injunctions filed under Clause IX and three mutually contradictory volumes of shared minutes.
