Guild of Casket-Wrights

MS 2976.01 · Guilds, orders and offices

Guild of Casket-Wrights is a certified trade guild, registered under Spiral 4 of the Seventh Concordance, Revision 4, responsible for the manufacture, certification, and hermetic sealing of Memory Caskets. It holds the sole and perpetual license for the formulation and application of Adhesive Silence, the binding agent required for a casket’s final closure.

Origins and Charter

The Guild’s founding charter, dated the 17th of Unmeasured Amber, 14,322 (Tower Reckoning), was ratified by the Librarians following the Silence Edict. This edict, which necessitated the secure containment of volatile or procedurally unstable knowledge, created the need for a specialized class of artisans. The Guild was formally separated from the broader Scrollwrights' Guild to ensure doctrinal purity and operational security around the sealing process. Its primary workshop and administrative headquarters are located on Floor 8,741, adjacent to the Aperture Gamma facilities used for casket unsealing.

Core Functions

The Guild’s operations are divided into three distinct branches:

  • Fabrication: Construction of the casket vessels themselves, typically from Translumine alloyed with trace elements of rhetorically-inert metals. Specifications vary by intended contents, as outlined in Annex Delta of the Silence Edict.
  • Licensing and Certification: Administering the rigorous examinations and apprenticeships required to produce a Casket-Wright. A licensed Casket-Wright is the only individual permitted to handle and apply Adhesive Silence.
  • Sealing Ritual: The final, ceremonious application of Adhesive Silence to a prepared casket in the presence of the responsible Architect-Superior, whose sigil is then impressed upon the seal.

Adhesive Silence

The Guild’s most closely guarded secret is the complete formula for Adhesive Silence, a substance described in guild literature as "not a glue, but a conclusion." Its properties are both physical and metaphysical, creating a barrier that is hermetic to air, light, meaning, and temporal decay. The Provisional Treatise on Binding Agents (Floor 22,109) notes that a properly applied seal renders the casket's contents "causally latent" until opened by a Key of Unmaking at a sanctioned aperture. The Guild of Clockwork Purists has historically contested the claim that the adhesive's effects are non-mechanical, but their petitions for disclosure have been consistently denied under Clause 17 of the Silence Edict.

Governance and Disputes

Internal governance follows a system of seniority based on seals applied, overseen by a Master-Bonder. The Guild’s relationship with other bodies is often delineated by procedural conflict. A long-standing jurisdictional dispute exists with the Guild of Formal Cartographers, who argue that the sealing of a casket containing cartographic concepts constitutes an act of "theoretical foreclosure" that should require their oversight. This dispute is currently dormant, filed under Dissents Log 744-B.

Furthermore, the Realized Absence Guild frequently requisitions caskets for the containment of potent nullities, leading to complex negotiations regarding fee structures, as the standard schedule of fees (Concordance Addendum 33.7) has no provision for "containing nothing of measurable volume." These negotiations are typically handled by the Guild of Factotums.

Notable Deviations and Interpretations

Scholarly interpretation of the Guild's mandate is not uniform. The most cited disagreement concerns the "Casket of the Unbuilt Wing." The casket bearing the sigil of the Architect-Superior of the Unbuilt Wing and containing the artifact designated Fig. 1 was recorded as sealed by a Guild apprentice, not a full Casket-Wright. The Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild argues this constitutes a violation of protocol that invalidates the seal, while the Guild of Casket-Wrights maintains that the presence of the Architect-Superior’s sigil retroactively validates the apprentice's actions under the principle of "authorized witness," a precedent cited from the now-suppressed Fifth Concordance, Revision 2. The casket remains sealed, and the matter is considered pending indefinite review.
