Standard Drift Units (SDUs)
MS 5163.41 · Practices and doctrines
Standard Drift Units (SDUs) are the Tower’s quantified measure for non-linear spatial, conceptual, and temporal variance. Defined under Amendment 7 to Ordinance 4 (Codicil 12-γ), the SDU provides a logarithmic scalar for calibrating deviations from established archival norms, most notably those pertaining to dimensional integrity, retroactive annotation, and linguistic anomaly. The Department of Ambiguous Metrics administers the official calibration protocols and maintains the Registry of Lingual Drift, the central repository for all verified SDU measurements.
Definition and Scale
One Standard Drift Unit is formally defined as a ten-percent divergence from the Mercurial Standard along a specified axis of measurement. The scale is logarithmic; a reading of -2 SDUs indicates a 21% cumulative variance, while -5 SDUs indicates a divergence exceeding 61%. Measurements are taken using a Resonance Plate and are audited against the Standard Bracket for angular integrity. The controversial expansion of the SDU’s purview from purely dimensional drift to include textual and temporal drift is the subject of ongoing scholarly amendment.
Primary Applications
SDUs are employed across three primary, and often overlapping, domains of Tower administration:
- Dimensional Drift: The original application, quantifying the physical instability of floors, shelves, and apertures. Tolerance for dimensional drift in a Standard Floor Unit (SFU) must not exceed ±5 SDUs per millennium, as per Annex Δ of the Third Concordance.
- Lingual and Textual Drift: Following Amendment 7, SDUs now quantify the drift of textual annotation, footnotes, and marginalia. This is distinct from, though related to, Ambient Footnote Drift, which describes the tendency for SDUs to accrue in areas of high referential density.
- Temporal and Retroactive Drift: SDUs measure divergence in chronological records and the “mass” of an isolated subject’s propensity to distort adjacent temporal records. Retroactive Drift is specifically quantified in negative SDUs.
Measurement and the Vex-Marlow Scale
Field measurement of SDUs is conducted using the Vex-Marlow scale, a diagnostic instrument that translates resonant frequencies into drift quanta. A drift alignment exceeding -5.2 SDUs on this scale is considered diagnostically significant for conditions such as Retroactive Numeracy. The scale is also the official metric for quantifying linguistic anomalies, with results permanently logged at the Registry. Disputes over calibration are typically resolved by citing the relevant, and often contradictory, Concordances.
Controversies and Ambiguities
The dual nature of the SDU as both a unit of physical measurement and a measure of conceptual “density” is a persistent source of bureaucratic friction. Critics within the Guild of Quantifiers argue that using the same unit for the width of a drifting staircase and the perceptual flattening of a catalogued metaphor creates ontological noise exceeding 7 SDUs. Proponents, often from the Department of Ambiguous Metrics, cite operational efficiency and the philosophical unity of all variance. Furthermore, the redefinition of “SDUs” in some departmental circulars as “Standard Density Units” — a dimensionless scalar for contextual density — has led to at least one recorded incident of recursive calibration failure on Floor 14,304 (The Annotated Atrium).
Notable Drift Events
- The Spiral 299 Incident (Recorded Drift: -23.7 SDUs)
- The sudden and severe retrograde numbering of an entire service spiral, resulting in the temporary co-location of a breakfast nook and a treatise on pre-geometric sorrow. Contained after seven hours by application of a Negative Standard Bracket.
- Chronicle of the Unspoken Emperor (Recorded Drift: -8.4 SDUs)
- A historical text whose footnotes began generating substantive new primary content at a rate of 0.3 SDUs per day, eventually requiring the footnotes to be catalogued as a separate, subsidiary holding.
- The SFU-D Recalibration (Recorded Drift: Variable)
- The decade-long project to realign the dimensional SFU with the newer conceptual STU, a process that itself generated an average background drift of -1.2 SDUs across seventeen adjacent floors.
