Empirical Demonstration
MS 7752.95 · Practices and doctrines
Empirical Demonstration is the practice by which a clerk establishes the status, properties, or non-contradiction of a holding through direct observation recorded at the moment of observation, rather than through citation, inference, or the recollection of a senior colleague. It is distinct from Demonstration generally in that an empirical demonstration must be witnessed — a demonstration performed to an empty room is entered in the register as a demonstration of nothing, and is filed under Unseen Collections. The practice is governed chiefly by the Fourth Concordance and, in its procedural details, by the Empirical Protocols inherited from the Empirical Archivists' League.
Definition and Classes
An empirical demonstration proceeds in three stated parts: what was seen, when it was seen, and by what means the seeing was confirmed. A demonstration lacking any of the three is presumed incomplete and is returned to the demonstrating clerk with the marginal note confirmatum? — a query that, by the Ninth Concordance, Annex 2, a clerk may answer only once per demonstration. The classes follow the general scheme: Alpha-class demonstrations concern fundamental principles and may overturn prior records; Beta-class demonstrations concern the integrity of active systems and require septennial re-certification; Gamma-class demonstrations validate a defined practice or artifact property within a controlled environment.
Dispute persists over whether the three-part statement is constitutive or merely evidentiary. The Fourth Concordance holds that a thing is demonstrated when the statement is complete; the Eleventh Concordance holds that the statement is only the record of a demonstration that has already occurred, and that a complete statement about an unwitnessed event is a lie with good handwriting. The Empirical Paradox School has declined to resolve the question, observing that both readings produce identical registers.
The Thornwood Recension
The method reached its present form during the recension conducted on Floor 2140 in the winter of the year recorded as 3 Cipher 14, when Librarian Ossian Thornwood was tasked with verifying the floor's inventory of Implied Fauna — creatures whose existence is inferred from their effects but which are not themselves present. Thornwood's difficulty was that every conventional demonstration of an implied creature requires observing an absence, and an absence, once observed, is an absence no longer. He resolved it by demonstrating the creature's effects in sequence and declining to demonstrate the creature. The register for that winter records forty-one such demonstrations, none of which establishes anything directly, all of which were accepted.
"The beast is not shown. The tracks are shown, the droppings are shown, and the handler is shown to be unwilling to enter the enclosure. Let that stand as the demonstration."
— Librarian Ossian Thornwood, Floor 2140 register, entry 41
The Thornwood method was later generalised and is now the standard procedure for holdings that cannot be brought to the table. It is also the standing grievance of Clerk Ambrose Fenwick, who argues that a demonstration of effects is a demonstration of effects and nothing more, and that the archive has been quietly cataloguing inferences under an empirical heading since 3 Cipher 14. Fenwick's memorandum of 3 Cipher 29 was accepted for filing and returned unread, a disposition the Guild of Archivists regards as settled and Fenwick does not.
Relation to Cartography and Transit
Empirical demonstration is the operating method of Empirical Cartography, which will draw nothing it has not stood in front of and measured, and the required preliminary to Empirical Transit Logging, whose observing clerks must demonstrate their own position before logging a departure. Where a departure requires the reconciliation of records in advance, the Pre-Transition Audit governs the demonstration of documentation harmony, and the School of Empirical Harmonization supplies the sequence in which conflicting demonstrations are to be reconciled — a sequence that, in practice, is almost always the order in which the demonstrations were received.
Demonstrations of luminance are conducted under the separate seal of the Guild of Empirical Luminance, which does not accept demonstrations performed by lamplight on the grounds that the lamp is a party to the result. Demonstrations conducted in the Resin Practicals Lab are confined to the lab's sole permitted configuration and may not be removed from it.
Records and Disputes
Every empirical demonstration is entered in the floor register with the class, the date, the names of those present, and the Illustrative Citation where one applies. Certificates of non-contradiction are issued against the Materialist Index and, where the demonstration establishes that time has been exhausted rather than merely spent, the Certificate of Temporal Exhaustion is attached at the back of the register and not, as was formerly the practice, pasted over the entry.
The principal unresolved dispute concerns demonstrations that fail. The Fourth Concordance requires a failed demonstration to be recorded in full, on the reasoning that a failure is itself a verified fact; the Eleventh Concordance requires it to be recorded as a nullity, on the reasoning that a failed demonstration demonstrates nothing and the register is not a diary. Both readings are cited at once in most floors. On Floor 2140 the matter was settled locally by an ordinance of the floor librarian permitting failed demonstrations to be entered in the margin in pencil, which practice has since spread to eleven floors and been condemned on four of them.
Clerks are reminded that the register is not to be taken from the demonstration floor, and that no demonstration may be performed during the hour of the changing of the lamps.
