Unitary

Unitary
A Unitary is a theoretical construct defined within the Tower’s epistemological protocols as an entity or proposition considered to be indivisible, irreducible, and existing in a state of absolute self-consistency. The concept is central to several branches of abstract cataloguing, most notably the Metaphysical Index and the disputed field of Integral Taxonomies. By definition, no true Unitary has ever been catalogued on any floor of the Tower, as the act of observation and inscription is held to introduce a fundamental division between the observer and the observed. Nevertheless, the pursuit of unitary states governs significant archival and administrative activity.
Definitional Framework
The formal definition is codified in Annex Δ of the Seventeenth Concordance, which states: A Unitary is that which admits no internal distinction, external relation, or descriptive gradient; it is the negation of the catalogue. This presents an immediate paradox for the Librarians, as the Tower’s entire purpose is the relational description of distinctions. Consequently, most working definitions are operational. For example, Clause 4.11.γ of the Provisional Indexing Guidelines instructs cataloguers to treat any subject that resists all forms of categorical bifurcation as a Provisional Unitary and to file it under a unique, non-hierarchical sigil in the Void Annexes.
Historical Pursuit
The quest to identify or create a Unitary has a long, fragmented history within the Tower. The earliest recorded reference appears in the marginalia of the Scroll of Perfect Ascent, a fragmentary text stored on Spiral 299, which describes a seamless orb that reflected nothing and cast no shadow. This spurred the Aperture Purists movement of the Epoch of Clear Glass, who attempted to polish certain lenses and mirrors to a state of such perfection that they would cease to mediate an image and become the thing itself. The movement was ultimately disbanded by Librarian decree for causing an unacceptable rate of perceptual accidents (see Decree of Occluded Vision).
The Unitary as Administrative Ideal
Despite its metaphysical elusiveness, the Unitary functions as a powerful bureaucratic ideal. The Department of Holistic Audits operates on the principle that any procedural system, if refined sufficiently, will approach a unitary state of flawless, frictionless operation. Their ongoing project, the Grand Unified Ledger, is an attempt to reconcile all contradictory entries in the Concordances into a single, self-consistent document—a goal widely considered to be both impossible and the Department’s sole reason for continued funding. Critics, such as the schismatic Committee of Necessary Splits, argue that this pursuit is not only futile but actively harmful, as it seeks to erase the productive tensions that make the Tower’s endless growth possible.
Disputed Sightings and Artifacts
Periodic claims of Unitary encounters are treated with extreme skepticism by the Librarians but are meticulously recorded in the Register of Anomalous Claims. The most famous is the case of the Silent Bell, an object reportedly discovered on Floor -Ξ that vibrated without producing sound and was described by the expedition leader as audibly whole. The bell vanished from a transfer chamber before it could be formally indexed, and the incident is now cited both as potential evidence of a Unitary and as a classic example of cataloguer hallucination brought on by stack-fatigue. Similarly, the Lens of Unbroken Gaze in the Ocularium is sometimes called a Unitary artifact, though most scholars classify it as a merely perfect lens, not a metaphysically indivisible entity.
Theoretical Implications
The theoretical implications of a verified Unitary are profound and contradictory. The Monist School, based primarily on Spiral 7, argues that the discovery of a single true Unitary would collapse the Tower’s entire taxonomic structure, revealing all apparent diversity to be illusory and rendering the archive superfluous. The Pluralist Orthodoxy, which underpins standard Librarian practice, holds that even if a Unitary were found, it would immediately generate its own antithesis through the very act of being identified, thus spawning new categories and justifying further cataloguing. This debate is considered eternally unresolved, as per the Doctrine of Productive Disagreement outlined in the Eighth Concordance.
Current Status
The official position, as stated in a footnote to Clause 22 of the Third Concordance, is that the Unitary remains a necessary regulative concept, not an empirical object. Research continues under tightly controlled protocols. The most recent initiative, Project Homogeny, involves feeding contradictory archival entries into a complex mechanical reconciliation engine in the hopes that it will, through sheer iterative force, produce a single coherent output. To date, the engine has only produced finer gradations of contradiction and several petitions for maintenance. All related files are kept in the Liminal Stacks adjacent to Aisle Ω.
