Integral Taxonomies
MS 1462.98 · Practices and doctrines
Integral Taxonomies is the formal discipline concerned with the cataloguing of systems whose defining properties are considered indivisible from the system itself. It is a contentious sub-field of abstract cataloguing, where the concept of a Unitary is central, and is governed by a complex and often contradictory web of Concordances.
Core Principle and the Unitary
The foundational axiom of Integral Taxonomies is that certain catalogued entities cannot be meaningfully decomposed into constituent parts without altering their essential nature. These entities are termed Unitaries. A Unitary is not simply a whole greater than the sum of its parts; it is a whole for which the concept of "parts" is a categorical error. For example, the silence curated by the Custodians of the Gilded Silence is often cited as a prototypical Unitary, as its quality—classified under Concordance 89 as a "positive auditory null-state"—dissipates when subjected to analytic segmentation.
The practice thus rejects the methodologies of Taxonomic Realists, who insist on calibrating all metrics against observable, repeatable phenomena. Integral taxonomists argue that Realist techniques, while suitable for the Department of Ephemeral Taxonomies on Floor 14,302, are incapable of apprehending the integral nature of a Unitary.
Governing Concordances and Jurisdictional Disputes
No single Concordance possesses sole authority over Integral Taxonomies. The Third Concordance provides the initial, albeit vague, definition of "indivisible archival objects," while the Seventeenth Concordance elaborates on procedural protocols for their handling. Disputes most frequently arise from DoIT-184 ("Directive on Interstitial Taxonomies"), which claims jurisdiction over "phenomena reported between numbered floors," a zone where many putative Unitaries are alleged to manifest.
These overlapping mandates create persistent conflict. A noted case involved the Senior Librarian for Particulate Taxonomies, who documented a persistent refractive index deviation in dust samples from Spiral 77. The Integral faction claimed the dust’s luminescent quality was a Unitary property of that specific spiral, while the Particulate office insisted it was a measurable physical anomaly. The dispute was ultimately tabled by the Curatorium of Verification, which requested (and has not yet received) a master calibration table from the Department of Ephemeral Taxonomies for comparison.
Applied Practices and Instrumentation
Integral taxonomies are applied in several key Tower operations. The most prominent is the assessment of Conceptual Load-Bearing Walls, which rely on integral equations established in the Manual of Latent Topography to calculate hypothetical load (Lh). The stability of certain non-Euclidean stacks, particularly in the Liminal Stacks, is predicated on these calculations.
Instrumentation is often abstract. The Probability Sparrow, a conceptual entity housed in Gol77 Alpha, is integral to the calibration protocols for Probability-Weighted Manifests. Its "presence" is treated as a Unitary calibration constant. Similarly, the Progressive Indexers' Collective utilizes integral principles when drafting cross-references for subjects that lack a definitive floor assignment, treating the referential link itself as an indivisible object.
Criticism and the Problem of Verification
The primary criticism levied against Integral Taxonomies is its resistance to empirical verification. Detractors, chiefly the Taxonomic Realists, argue it creates a self-justifying epistemic loop: an entity is declared a Unitary because it resists standard analysis, and its resistance to standard analysis is then cited as proof of its Unitary status. The Curatorium of Verification, which includes a senior archivist from the Department of Ephemeral Taxonomies, maintains a standing inquiry into the field's methodological rigor.
Furthermore, Ordinance 712-B specifies Basalt of Stillness as the required substrate for certain archival rituals designed to induce procedural deceleration. Integral taxonomists claim the ordinance’s efficacy proves the basalt’s integral, Unitary property of "stillness," while opponents contend it is merely a dense, non-resonant rock chosen for mundane physical reasons.
Related Disciplines and Adjacent Fields
Integral Taxonomies shares significant border disputes with Oneiric Taxonomies, as the products of the Dream-Scribes often exhibit Unitary characteristics. The ontological status of a catalogued dream—whether it is an integral experience or a decomposable narrative—remains a heated debate. The field also interfaces with the cataloguing of silence, as practiced in the Silent Stacks (Floor Ȣ), and with the provisional systems maintained on Floor 7,402, which deals with 'Provisional Taxonomies of Ephemeral Consensus'.
The Newel Post of certain central stairwells is occasionally cited in integral literature as a physical anchor for topological Unitaries, though this is considered a speculative, non-canonical application. Ultimately, the discipline persists because the Tower itself, as an endless archive, operates on principles that often defy decomposition, making Integral Taxonomies not merely an academic exercise, but a necessary, if disputed, tool for its own continuation.
