Liminal Stacks

“The liminal is not merely between; it is the substance of the betweenness itself, and thus requires its own shelves.”
— Concordance 77, Annex δ, Clause 12
The Liminal Stacks constitute a non-contiguous archival domain within The Tower, dedicated to the classification, containment, and study of materials, concepts, and entities deemed to occupy a state of transition, potentiality, or unresolved definition. Unlike the Sequestered or Somatic holdings, the Liminal Stacks are defined not by a fixed physical location but by a condition of being, governed by the administrative protocols of Concordance 77 and overseen by the Custodian of the Stacks in their capacity as Warden of Ephemeral Holdings.
Architectural and Ontological Status
The Stacks are not a single repository but a distributed network of shelves, aisles, and reading carrels that manifest in interstitial spaces throughout the Tower’s infrastructure. Common loci include the margins between numbered floors (e.g., the landings of Stairwell -), the architectural seams behind Lower Stack partition walls such as Σ-9, and the transient reading rooms adjacent to major administrative hubs like The Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy. Their most stable and documented manifestation is the Liminal Scriptorium on Floor 506, which serves as the administrative nexus and the site of the Atelier of Permanent Impressions.
Physically, the shelves are constructed of a porous, grey composite material that exhibits properties of both stone and unfinished paper pulp. They are subject to “gentle flux,” a state sanctioned by Concordance 77, Annex γ, whereby their dimensions, number of shelves, and even their apparent solidity may shift between visits, provided core inventory ledgers remain consistent.
Scope of Holdings
The collection mandate, as per the Precedent of Recursive Jurisdiction (Floor 5,712, Ruling 889), is exceptionally broad. Core categories include:
- Provisional Texts: Drafts, palimpsests, annotations awaiting integration, and sentences severed from their original volumes, many of which eventually feed into the Whispering Stacks.
- Ontological Debris: Fragments of concepts, half-formed thoughts, and the residual “might-have-beens” shed by more stable entities. A significant sub-collection is the Ontological Debris catalogue.
- Inter-Floor Artifacts: Objects found on staircases, in elevator shafts, or otherwise between clear jurisdictions. Their final classification is often pending for centuries.
- The Unfinished Metacollection: An attempt, initiated in 94 SCE, to catalog all other liminal collections. Its index currently occupies fourteen shifting shelves and is itself a prime specimen of the domain it seeks to describe.
Administration and Access
Direct oversight falls to the Warden of Ephemeral Stacks, a sub-office of the Custodian of the Stacks. The Warden’s primary duty, as codified in Concordance 77, is “to render liminal spaces legible to the archive,” a task involving constant negotiation between the need for order and the inherent instability of the materials. Access is typically granted under Provisional Reading Permit Γ-7, which requires the patron to submit a statement of intent and a deposit of one unsaid thought upon entry.
Disputes regarding whether an item has resolved its liminal state and should be transferred to a permanent stack (such as the Silent Stacks or Vertical Stacks) are adjudicated by the Clerk of Thresholds, whose rulings often cite contradictory annexes of Concordance 77, leading to a state of productive bureaucratic stasis for many holdings.
Controversies and Scholarly Disputes
The ontological status of the Liminal Stacks themselves is a persistent subject of debate. The Formalist School, based in the East Unbound Stacks, argues they are merely an administrative category—a filing solution for problematic items. The Incidentalists, however, contend the Stacks are a fundamental, if subtle, architectural feature of the Tower, as real as the Spiral or Non-Euclidean Stacks, and point to the consistent material properties of the shelves as proof.
A more practical controversy surrounds the “Creep” phenomenon, wherein definitively non-liminal materials from adjacent Lateral Stacks gradually appear on Liminal shelves. The Warden’s office maintains this is due to mis-shelving by junior clerks, while the Silent College has published treatises suggesting it is a form of conceptual entropy inherent to the Tower’s structure.
Related Collections and Cross-References
The Liminal Stacks maintain active transfer protocols with several permanent collections. Materials exhibiting auditory leakage are often routed to the Whispering Stacks. Those that achieve a state of perfect, immutable stillness may be recommended for the Silent Stacks. The Stacks also share a logistical relationship with the Anechoic Galleries for the storage of particularly resonant transitional artifacts. The Paper Shortage of the Lower Stacks of 201 SCE was, notably, exacerbated by the Liminal Stacks’ claim on all “marginally soluble” pulp materials within three vertical leagues.
The final, and perhaps most defining, characteristic of the Liminal Stacks is recorded in the marginalia of the Head Warden’s log: “A thing remains in the Liminal Stacks only as long as it is perceived to be transitioning. The moment it is declared to have arrived, it invariably has somewhere else to be.”
