Liminal Shelf

MS 4999.49 · Places and structures

The Liminal Shelf is the collective designation for the nine hundred and eleven shelf-runs that lie between the Liminal Stacks proper and the ordinary fixed shelving of the surrounding floors. It is neither a place nor a collection in any strict sense. Fourth Concordance, Clause 12, defines it as "the interval, of indeterminate depth, in which a holding is retained but no longer arranged," and all subsequent administration has proceeded on that description. Materials on the Liminal Shelf cannot be removed, because removal would require them to be located first, and location is what the interval withholds.

The Shelf is entered, when it is entered, from the landing of Floor 507, through a door marked in the Master Shelf Coordinate List as unnumbered. The door is not posted. Ask at the Liminal Scriptorium on Floor 506 and a clerk will look it up.

Origins and the Refusal of Accession

The Liminal Shelf was not built; it accumulated. The earliest reference in the record is a marginal note of 3 Ordinal, 613, in which a reshelving clerk observed that certain volumes would not hold their classification long enough to be stamped. The practice that followed — setting such volumes aside indefinitely — was regularized in 614 by Fifth Concordance, Clause 40, which forbade the destruction of any item "whose category will not settle," and left the disposition of such items unstated. The unstated disposition became the Shelf.

Scholarship is divided on whether the Shelf is a floor, a condition, or an accounting entry. The Guild of Liminal Masons held, in a survey of 702, that the Shelf has a continuous horizontal extent of roughly two and a half miles behind the door on Floor 507, which is greater than the floor's exterior profile permits. Archivist-Loremaster Valerius disputed the survey on the grounds that a measurement taken inside the interval "records only the measuring." The matter was referred to the Office of Unsettled Precedent in 704 and has not been concluded.

Arrangement and the Standing Gap

Holdings on the Liminal Shelf are arranged by nothing, which is to say they are arranged by the degree to which their subjects resist classification. The approximate order runs from items whose subjects are merely disputed to items whose subjects have not occurred to anyone in a position to classify them. Between the two lies the Standing Gap, a stretch of forty-one feet of bare shelf, empty since first observed and inspected annually. In 889 an inspector of the Bureau of Shelf Integrity proposed filling it with duplicate stamped copies selected by lot, to preserve the appearance of arrangement. The proposal was denied by Eighth Concordance, Annex 4, which held that an empty interval of known length is a record and an occupied one is not.

Access is not encouraged. Under the standing rule affixed to the inner face of the door, visitors may bring a candle and a single pencil, and must surrender the pencil on leaving. The rule has been dated to 731 and never revised.

The Shelf-Charting Dispute

Since the formation of the Shelf, at least seven offices have attempted to chart it. The Office of Unsettled Precedent ruled in 704 that no chart may be certified until the interval is measured, and no measurement may be certified until the interval is charted. The circularity was not an error; the ruling noted that "a question may be held open without harm to the holdings it leaves in place."

The most complete attempt is Map 7 Certification Amp Shelf Placement, which charts the first two hundred and six feet of the Shelf in adequate detail and then records, in an annex, that the draughtsman declined to continue on the ground that his instruments had begun to measure his own position more precisely than the shelf's. Map 7 is regarded as authoritative for the stretch it covers and has not been extended.

The Whisper-Shelf West

At approximately three hundred feet in, the Liminal Shelf passes behind the Whisper-Shelf and enters what records call the whisper-shelf west, a stretch in which the aggregate of the Shelf's unclassified material produces a low, continuous murmur. The murmur is not speech and does not resolve into any language on record; the Postulate 44-Alpha ("The Whispering Shelf") treats it as a byproduct of arrangement rather than a phenomenon in its own right. Listeners disagree. A note of the Observers' Bench dated 26 Winter, 956, records that the murmur "was heard for six hours and said nothing, though it said it continuously."

Beyond the whisper-shelf west the Shelf is described in every account as proceeding further, but no account returns from beyond. Expeditions are dispatched at intervals and return with inventories and no conclusions, a characteristic shared with the Correspondents of the Empty Shelf and with all other ventures into The Tower's indeterminate regions.

Notable Holdings

The Shelf holds items the archive has catalogued only by their inability to be catalogued. A selective inventory follows.

Administration

The Shelf is nominally administered by the Liminal Scriptorium on Floor 506, in its capacity as nexus of the Liminal Stacks, and practically administered by no one. Its sole continuous service is the annual inspection by the Bureau of Shelf Integrity, which confirms that the Standing Gap remains empty and files a report to that effect. The reports number two hundred and eighty-one and are kept on the Shelf.

"The Liminal Shelf is held open not because open questions are valued, but because the closing of this one would require knowing what it contained, and the knowing would close it."

— Fifth Concordance, Annex 2, commentary to Clause 40

The interpretation is disputed. Eighth Concordance, in an unusually terse recension, offers instead that the Shelf "is where the archive puts things it is not yet ready to have meant," which the Office of Unsettled Precedent has declined to adopt as operative text.
