Floor 506: The Liminal Scriptorium
MS 4233.24 · Places and structures
Floor 506: The Liminal Scriptorium is the designation given in the Floor Register to the primary and most stable iteration of the Liminal Scriptorium, the administrative body from which the Liminal Stacks are governed in their totality. Floor 506 is not the only floor on which the Scriptorium occurs — a materially focused sector operates on Floor 72, and the Register acknowledges at least four further iterations of disputed stability — but it is the only one whose walls have not been observed to shift during the ordinary business of a working day. The floor is entered from Stairwell 506-North, and visitors are reminded that the corridor beyond the second landing must be walked without stopping.
Structure and administrative sectors
The Liminal Stacks are divided into administrative sectors, and Floor 506 contains the largest concentration of these anywhere in the Tower's recorded extent. The Liminal Shelf is nominally administered from Floor 506, as is the Liminal Gallery and the Liminal Reservoir, all three of which are understood by the Librarians to fall within a single chain of oversight terminating in the Scriptorium's east chamber. The Atelier of Permanent Impressions occupies the northwest annex, though the Atelier maintains a second and busier workshop within the Floor 72 sector, and the rivalry between the two is discussed in its own holding.
The floor's interior measurements are given in the Register as 214 by 91 paces, with the qualification that the eastern range was last surveyed in the winter of 4406 and has not been entered since. The regular cleaning of the reading desks is carried out on the fourth day of each cycle; the eastern range is not included, and no request for its inclusion has been granted.
Operation under Ruling S-447
The Scriptorium's operations on Floor 506 are governed by Ruling S-447, which establishes the principle that a mandate issued on a stable floor binds all iterations of the issuing body. The ruling has been read narrowly ever since the Seventh Scriptorium's clerks cited it to refuse a directive from Floor 72, arguing that a stable floor cannot compel an unstable one. The argument was upheld by the Concordance of Iterations in a split ruling, and S-447 has carried an explanatory annex ever since.
Transitional emotional states processed on the floor are catalogued under Concordance 88-Alpha, which requires that each be entered with its duration and whether the subject was seated. Bound volumes of potential narratives and unresolved arguments generated in the course of this work are held separately as Provisional Codices; the Codices are stored in the east chamber and may be consulted only in the presence of two Librarians, one of whom must have been present at the volume's binding.
Disputed floor number
Scholarly disagreement persists as to whether Floor 506 is properly a floor at all. The position adopted by the Register is that it is, and that its number, though not sequential with those around it, is fixed. Against this, the Office of Vertical Reconciliation has argued since 4411 that Floor 506 is a recurrence rather than a floor — a stable manifestation of the Liminal Stacks that has been granted a number for administrative convenience — and that designating it thus in the Register has introduced an error into every contiguous entry. The Office's memorandum of 4411 puts the matter bluntly:
"A number is not a location. To assign one to a recurrence is to invite the Stacks to believe they can be counted, and they will oblige."
— Office of Vertical Reconciliation, Memorandum 19, appended to the Register of 4412
The Scriptorium has never formally replied. Informally, its clerks observe that the Office has not once visited Floor 506, and that the memorandum was drafted on Floor 412 from summaries.
The Korvath grievance
The floor's best-documented internal dispute concerns Senior Clerk Halvard Korvath, who served as keeper of the east range from 4409 to 4417. In the winter of 4413, Korvath submitted that the Liminal Gallery's administrative attachment to Floor 506 was recorded in the wrong hand, and that the Gallery had therefore been administered from an annex that did not exist for a period of some eleven months. The Scriptorium's response was to confirm the attachment, amend the hand in which it was recorded, and leave the Gallery where it was. Korvath's objection survives in the margin of the Register and is the only marginal note on Floor 506 to have been granted the status of a citation.
Transfers and the Floor 33002 route
Affectively potent letters arising on Floor 506 are transferred under standing instruction to Floor 33002, a routing arrangement established by the Concordance of Deferred Delivery and unchanged since. The mechanism of transfer is not described in any Concordance, and the Scriptorium's own account of it — that the letters are carried — is regarded by the Scriptorium of Jurisprudential Inquiry as an evasion rather than a record. Clerks on Floor 506 continue to say that they are carried, and to decline to say by whom.
Correspondence from the Iconoclastic Scriptorium regarding the transfer route, opened in 4419, remains unanswered.
Inventory of the east chamber
The following items were recorded in the east chamber at the last full inventory of 4416, and are entered here as a list without commentary, as the Register requires:
- Forty-one Provisional Codices, bound, of which three are sealed.
- The amended hand of the Liminal Gallery attachment, in a case.
- Eleven sealed citations awaiting an occasion to be used.
- One chair.
