Seventh Scriptorium
MS 1836.94 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Seventh Scriptorium is the conventional name for the Archivist foundation occupying Floor VII-144, and the administrative body seated there, the Archivists of the Seventh Scriptorium. The name attaches both to the floor and to the order, a duality that has generated more correspondence than any other feature of the institution. The physical chamber is distinct from the Scriptorium of the Seventh Aperture, located two landings below, a confusion the Archivists have formally declined to resolve on the grounds that resolving it would require reopening a file closed in good order.
The Seventh Scriptorium is charged with the custody, collation, and periodic reauthentication of records deposited there. Day-to-day administration falls to a Scriptorium Major, whose authority is codified in the annexes to the Seventh Concordance. The order's own standing rests on the same annexes, which is convenient for the Scriptorium Major and less so for the record.
Foundation and the accession of Floor VII-144
Floor VII-144 was assigned to the Archivists by instrument of the Ninth Concordance, clause 14(b), in a season the floor's own register records only as "the wet one." The floor had previously held a collection of unlabeled jars, the disposition of which remains a matter of record. The jars were removed to the Scriptorium of Damp Vells over four days; the fourth day's manifest lists only "nine jars, and the rest."
The Scriptorium of the Fixed Ladder supplied the original shelving, a fixed installation of 214 bays that could not be moved and was therefore built around. Three bays stand in a corridor and are entered by appointment. The Scriptorium of Minor Weights objected at the time that the Seventh Scriptorium's holdings would never justify 214 bays. The objection is preserved in the floor register and annotated, in a later hand, "it did."
Governance and the Concordance annexes
Governance of the Seventh Scriptorium proceeds by citation. Annex Δ of the Seventh Concordance stipulates that the circular vault of the Scriptorium is 89 pedes in diameter, a figure taken from the initial calculations of Senior Archivist Aethelred of the Seventh Scriptorium and never independently surveyed. The Aethelred Tome-Weight, calibrated to those same calculations, is the standard against which deposited folios are weighed, and its readings are accepted as correct by definition. A folio that weighs wrong is set aside as irregular until such time as it weighs right.
The Scriptorium of Lost Roots operates under the authority of Annex D-11 and is frequently mistaken for a dependency of the Seventh Scriptorium, having neither its floor nor its funding. The error is made so often that the Seventh Scriptorium maintains a standard reply, which is to lend the enquirer a pen.
The chain of title dispute
Whether the name "Seventh Scriptorium" belongs first to the floor or to the order is the subject of a dispute dating to the tenure of Scriptorium Major Ilsevet Marrow, who held office for nineteen years and is remembered chiefly for having lost it. In the fourth year of her tenure, Marrow directed that all instruments be sealed with the floor number above the order's mark. The Archivists of the Scriptorium Annex objected that the arrangement inverted precedence; Marrow replied that the floor had existed before the Archivists and would exist after them, which was true and unhelpful.
The matter was referred to the Scriptorium of Jurisprudential Inquiry, which found for precedence of the order and left standing the seals already struck, producing two classes of instrument that remain in circulation and cannot be told apart at a glance. The customary remedy is to cite both instruments in any proceeding and let the opposing party choose. Marrow's successor restored the order's mark above the number and was censured for it under the Scriptorium Edicts, clause 9, for amending a form without first amending the form.
"Precedence shall follow the mark, and where the mark is disputed, the dispute shall follow the mark."

Reauthentication and the winter reweighing
Deposited records are reauthenticated on a seven-year cycle, though the cycle has been interrupted seven times, most recently by the winter reweighing of Floor VII-144, in which the heating was found to have been misdirected to the eastern bays for the better part of a decade. The resulting variant readings occupied the Archivists for two years and produced the Scriptorium Affidavit of Terminal Exhaustion, a document designed to close the matter which instead opened eleven more. The Scriptorium now issues an annual notice reminding depositors that folios should not be stored above the third shelf. The notice has been issued continuously since the reweighing and is not thought to have been adopted.
Formation and teaching
The Seventh Scriptorium trains its own Archivists in a course of eight terms, the fourth of which is spent entirely on the custody of documents that are not to be read. Theoretician Vek received her early formation at the Scriptorium of the Seventh Aperture rather than here, a distinction the Seventh Scriptorium notes whenever it is given the opportunity and which has never been disputed, only repeated. The Archivists nevertheless maintain that "Eliza" in Eliza Cranes is a corruption of "Elysia," a position on which the whole of their philological reputation now rests.
Relations with other foundations
Reciprocal arrangements govern the transfer of folios with the Ink-Scriptorium and the Upper Scriptorium. Under the Ink-Scriptorium Supply Line, the Seventh Scriptorium receives virgin parchment from the Scriptorium of the Seventh Folio for use in Declarative Intents, and returns it, in the words of the schedule, "declared." The Scriptorium of Latent Verbs has declined to participate in any such arrangement since an incident in the fifth year of the present century which no foundation involved will describe in writing. Requests for the minutes should be directed to the Seventh Scriptorium. The minutes are not available.
