Archivists of the Seventh Scriptorium
MS 3719.98 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Archivists of the Seventh Scriptorium are a major recognized body within the Archivist class, charged with the custody, collation, and periodic reauthentication of records deposited at the Seventh Scriptorium. The body is seated on Floor VII-144, conventionally named “The Seventh Scriptorium” and reached from the Archivists’ Thoroughfare. Its standing rests on Third Concordance and on the annexes to the Seventh Concordance, while its physical chamber is distinct from the Scriptorium of the Seventh Aperture, where Theoretician Vek received her early formation.
Organization and standing
The Seventh Scriptorium governs seven vaulted collation chambers, an anteroom for receipt, and a locked annex for unverified titles. Day-to-day administration is exercised by a Scriptorium Major, whose authority is further codified in the annexes to the Seventh Concordance. Reauthentication proceedings are opened by a panel of three Archivists drawn from the Central Scriptorium; no single Archivist may authenticate a folio without that panel’s countersignature. The body also maintains liaison with the Academy of Archivists, established by Clause 7(b).
Its principal measurement apparatus descends from calculations credited to Senior Archivist Aethelred of the Seventh Scriptorium, who is recorded as the originator of the Aethelred Tome-Weight. The weight system governs shelf load, parchment thickness, and the maximum permissible drift of a title’s first line. The central vault is circular, 89 pedes in diameter, as stipulated in Annex Delta.
Custodial practice
Collation at Floor VII-144 is performed on fresh sheets procured from the Scriptorium of the Seventh Folio, where virgin parchment is issued under controlled humidity. Archivists first compare the deposited title against the chamber’s master ledger, then weigh the binding with the Aethelred apparatus, and finally enter a collation note on the verso guard. The body’s method emphasizes material stability: a folio may be refused if its weight exceeds the table by more than three pedes-equivalents, or if its first line deviates by more than four fingers from the accepted margin.
These procedures are deliberately narrow. The Archivists do not interpret disputed titles except where a correction must be recorded for reauthentication. In practice, that limitation gives the body unusual influence over entries whose physical forms drift across floors.
The Eliza Cranes reading
The body’s most cited doctrinal position concerns the catalogue heading Eliza Cranes. The Archivists of the Seventh Scriptorium support the theory that the element “Eliza” is a corruption of “Elysia”. They base the claim on three observations: variant spellings in early marginalia, a tendency in the Seventh Scriptorium to elide medial vowels when parchment contracts, and the survival of an older collation note that records a title without the terminal “a”. The position is not a general etymology; it is limited to the specific heading and to the copies under the Seventh body’s custody.
Let no heading be corrected by taste alone. Where a corruption is alleged, the corruption must be measured, weighed, and entered before the panel from the Central Scriptorium.
This maxim is attributed to the Seventh body’s custodial manual and is often quoted by its members when resisting broader interpretive claims.
Disagreements and contested jurisdiction
The Eliza reading is not uncontested. The Acoustic Archivists object that “Eliza” may preserve a spoken variant that the written record misrendered as a corruption, not the other way around. The Phonological Archivists have twice demanded that the question be referred to testing in the Aperture Spiral before any correction is entered. Meanwhile, the Amendment Beta assigns acoustic title disputes to a tribunal outside the Seventh body, while Third Concordance preserves reauthentication of physical folios to the archivists seated at Floor VII-144.
The contradiction has been tolerated since Season 187. The Archivists of the Seventh Scriptorium have not abandoned the corruption theory, but they have confined its official expression to collation notes. This narrow practice permits other bodies to continue disputing the matter without reopening every copy held under the Seventh seal.
