Evidence Reauthentication
MS 6412.91 · Practices and doctrines
The process of Evidence Reauthentication is the formal re-evaluation and revalidation of documentary or material evidence previously entered into the Tower's evidentiary record, conducted under the authority of the Librarians' Tribunal. It is distinct from initial authentication in that it concerns evidence whose validity has been rendered questionable by subsequent discovery, procedural irregularity, or a material change in its condition.
Reauthentication is governed primarily by the elaborate strictures of Clause 7 of the Eleventh Concordance and its implementing procedures, as managed by the Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence. The process is not considered an appeal of a Tribunal finding, but rather a correction to the evidentiary foundation upon which all such findings rest. A successful reauthentication does not automatically overturn a prior judgment; it merely re-establishes the evidence as viable for future consideration.
Triggers for Reauthentication
The Concordances enumerate seven distinct triggers that mandate the initiation of a reauthentication proceeding.
- Emergent Corollary: The discovery of a corollary of evidence that directly contradicts or fatally undermines the integrity of the original item.
- Material Degradation: A measurable, physical change in the evidence item that alters its legibility, composition, or structural integrity, as verified by the Lower Scriptorium.
- Procedural Lapse: Evidence that an authentication was conducted under a since-repealed or improperly applied clause of a Concordance.
- Declared Self-Contradiction: The evidence item is formally certified as a Certified Self Contradictory Folio, wherein its internal claims are mutually exclusive.
- Referential Collapse: The invalidation of a foundational cross-reference, such as the decommissioning of a Fixed Ladder Scriptorium, upon which the evidence’s chain of custody relied.
- Chronological Anomaly: The evidence is found to possess a dating marker or temporal reference that is logically impossible within the established timelines of the Tower (e.g., referencing a floor before its official designation).
- Blank Folio Adjacency: The evidence is physically or procedurally adjacent to a Blank Folio, raising questions of contextual contamination.
The Iterative Chamber Protocol
All reauthentication proceedings are conducted within an Iterative Chamber, a specialized hearing room on Floor 12 equipped for recursive analysis. The protocol is strictly sequential:
- The evidence item is placed under formal sequestration.
- A panel of three Archivists, drawn from the Central Scriptorium, is convened.
- The original authentication record is entered into the Chamber’s ledger.
- Each of the seven trigger criteria is evaluated in turn; the proceeding halts upon confirmation of the first valid trigger.
- A full Crossreferential Stability Check is performed on all citations within the evidence.
- The panel renders one of three verdicts: Reauthenticated, Reauthenticated with Qualifications, or Decommissioned.
A verdict of Reauthenticated with Qualifications requires the appending of a Corrigendum Slip, detailing the specific limitations or conditions of the evidence's renewed validity. A Decommissioned verdict results in the evidence being struck from the active record and entered into the Master Folio of Pending Evidence, where it is marked as "adjudicated but inert."
Scholarly Disputes
The primary controversy surrounding Evidence Reauthentication stems from the Axiom of Documented Intent, a core principle of the Realist School. The Axiom holds that the original intent and context of a document's creation are immutable and must be the sole focus of authentication. Reauthentication, by its nature, applies contemporary standards and newly discovered corollaries to judge past evidence, which Realists argue creates a form of historical presentism, corrupting the archival record.
Conversely, the prevailing administrative view, endorsed by the Sub-Office of Corollary Evidence, is that evidence exists in a living archive and must remain coherent within the ever-expanding web of Concordances and findings. A document that contradicts a later-established truth, they argue, has effectively changed its own evidentiary value and must be reassessed. This debate is most acute in cases involving the Archive of Particular Noons, where temporal specificity is often at odds with subsequent chronological recalibrations.
Record-Keeping and the Fixed Ladder
Every reauthentication proceeding, regardless of outcome, is logged in the Fixed Ladder Index. The index entry includes the evidence’s original designation, the triggering criterion, the panel’s verdict, and a unique Iterative Chamber case number. This creates a "ladder" of authenticity states for any given piece of evidence, which can be consulted during future Librarians' Tribunal proceedings. It is a standing order that any evidence which has undergone three or more reauthentications must be reviewed by the Tribunal itself prior to its next evidentiary use, a rule designed to prevent infinite procedural recursion.
