Iteration

MS 3650.95 · Practices and doctrines

Iteration is the fundamental administrative unit of recension within the Tower, denoting a bounded cycle of proposal, amendment, and ratification by which a given body of the Concordance of Simultaneous Holdings is restated. An Iteration is concluded only by the application of the Seal of Final Iteration to its corresponding Iteration Marker, a requirement established under Annex 7 of the Tertiary Iteration.

Classification of Iterations

Iterations are formally distinguished by ordinal prefix and by the complex to which their records are committed. The Tertiary Iteration constitutes the third complete restatement of the Concordance of Simultaneous Holdings and remains the root reference for all subordinate recensions. Predictive Iterations, such as the Record of the Thirtysecond Predictive Iteration, are those compiled in anticipation of conditions not yet catalogued; the Clerk of Predictive Melancholy is appointed to such records by standing custom of the Ninth Iteration Complex. Lateral and recursive Iterations are administered from the Eighth Lateral Annex, wherein the Gamma Iteration Chronon is employed to calibrate the duration of paradoxes arising mid-cycle.

Dispute persists as to whether an Iteration that fails to receive the Seal before the collapse of its sponsoring floor retains provisional force. The Sixteenth Concordance holds that "no protocol shall be considered extant until its form is ratified by the Seal of Final Iteration," whereas the Seventh Amendment concedes a moratorium of up to eleven apertures where the Board of Concordant Arbitration has not ruled. The contradiction has not been resolved and is cited annually in the audits of the Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild.

Procedure and Ratification

An Iteration commences with the inscribing of an Iteration Marker upon the floor designated by the presiding Librarian. The Marker is thereafter amended more often than read, in accordance with general Tower practice. Upon closure, the Seal of Final Iteration is struck; where the Iteration is of a predictive character, the rare Black Seal of Final Iteration may be applied, as was done to the Record of the Thirtysecond Predictive Iteration on 14 Sigma, Year of the Tertiary Spiral.

"An Iteration lacking the Seal is a door lacking a latch; it may be entered, but it will not close."

— Third Concordance, Annex 4

In the winter of the Year of the Coiled Aperture, the scribes of Floor 902 attempted to ratify an Iteration using a Seal carved from packing-board, on the grounds that the authorised die had been lent to the Variant VII. The resulting concordance was voided by the Sentient Scribe, who noted that the substance contravened Clause 9 of the Tertiary Iteration.

Notable Incidents

The Schism of Iteration 442 arose when contradictory rulings by the Board of Concordant Arbitration concerning Clause 442 of the Tertiary Iteration — regarding dice used in lotteries — produced two sealed Markers for a single cycle. Both were accepted by separate scriptoria, and the discrepancy was not detected until the The Partial Survey (1901-1903) reached the relevant shelf. Reconciliation required the intervention of the Clerk of Predictive Melancholy, who appended a note stating merely that "the second die was heavier."

A further anomaly is recorded in the Thirteenth Copy of the Miletus Diagram, which depicts an Iteration proceeding downward through The Recursive Motif without issuing a Marker. The Variant I is there shown arbitrating the cycle, though no concordance survived to confirm the account.

Scholarly Disagreement

The question of whether an Iteration may contain a smaller Iteration in full has divided the Librarians since the Ninth Iteration Complex first catalogued recursive phenomena. The Sixteenth Concordance denies the possibility outright, citing the indivisibility of the Seal. The Seventh Amendment, conversely, permits nested Iterations provided each receives a distinct Gamma Iteration Chronon reading. The Expeditionary Cartographers' Guild has declined to map the dispute, on the grounds that "the floors involved do not agree to be adjacent."

Administrative Note

Visitors to an active Iteration are asked not to lean on the Marker, as the wax of the Seal of Final Iteration requires nineteen days to set on floors above the twenty-eighth spiral and may imprint a sleeve indefinitely.
