Floor 7,402
MS 2199.42 · Places and structures
Floor 7,402, also designated the Galleria of Fallen Cardinal Directions, is a high-level exhibition floor situated administratively between Floor 7,400 and Floor 8,008. Its primary function is the curation and preservation of cardinal and ordinal directions that have, through either disuse or topological anomaly, ceased to exist outside the Tower’s archival reality.
“The direction known as ‘Nor’theast-by-South’ was formally interred in Aisle 7-B on the 14th of Vendémiaire, Year of the Twisted Spire. Its associated winds are kept in a stoppered vial.”
Topography and Structure
The floor is arranged as a vast, hexagonal rotunda, with each of the six primary walls corresponding to a traditional cardinal or intercardinal point (N, E, S, W, NE, SW, etc.). These walls are lined with sealed vitrines and climate-controlled niches. The center of the rotunda is occupied by the Compass Rose Atrium, a circular depression where the floor itself is a single, flawless disk of magnetized Tower-grade hematite. The ceiling is a dome of smoked glass, through which the perpetual, but directionless, gloaming of the upper Tower diffuses.
Access is via the North–South Promotion Shaft, which terminates at an antechamber on the northern wall. Per Ordinance 7402.1, all visitors must undergo a brief calibration ritual involving a non-magnetic sundial to “shed external directional bias” before proceeding into the Galleria proper.
Primary Collections
The Galleria’s holdings are categorized by type of directional failure.
- Forgotten Ordinals: This wing houses directions such as “Nor-norwest,” “East-southeast-by-east,” and the celebrated “Leftward Up.” Each is preserved with its original compass-rose fragment and any attendant meteorological phenomena (e.g., the “Chinook of Nor’theast-by-South”).
- Collapsed Axes: Directions that ceased to be when the spaces they once defined folded. This includes the complete “Z-axis” from a brief, anomalous period when the Tower experimentally acknowledged depth, and the “Temporal North” that pointed only toward last Tuesday.
- Contradicted Cardinals: Directions rendered obsolete by Librarian decree or topological revision. The most famous is “Polestar South,” which was retired when Floor 2001’s cartographic division determined it conflicted with the True Southern Annex of Floor 714.
- The Antechamber of Lost ‘Up’: A sealed vault containing seventeen distinct, non-identical versions of “up” that have been deprecated due to staircase realignments or gravitational recalibrations on adjacent floors like Floor 1117 and Floor 881.
Administration and Curatorial Practice
Floor 7,402 falls under the purview of the Cartographer-General, though daily operations are managed by a sub-order known as the Keepers of the Bearing. Their mandate, as per Clause 402 of the Seventh Concordance, is to “maintain the conceptual inertia of all retired vectors.” This involves regular polishing of the central hematite disk, periodic re-alignment of vitrines by 1/360th of a degree to prevent “directional fatigue,” and the meticulous logging of any residual “leakage” from the stored directions.
A point of significant scholarly dispute concerns the ontological status of the collections. The Tenth Concordance insists the directions are “inert conceptual artifacts,” while the later Twelfth Concordance argues they are “merely sleeping, and their curation is a form of hospice care.” This contradiction leads to regular procedural clashes, such as whether the winds in the stoppered vials should be “aired” periodically.
Notable Incidents
- The Leak of ’88
- In the Tower year 188, a hairline fracture in the vitrine containing “Downslant Southeast” allowed its essence to seep into the Promotion Shaft. For three days, all traffic between Floor 7400 and 7,402 proceeded at a persistent 15-degree list. The repair required a temporary loan of supplemental gravity from Floor 317.
- The Great Re-alignment Debate
- A protracted scholarly conflict (c. Tower year 451) over whether the entire Galleria should be rotated 90 degrees to better align with the theoretical “True Grid” of Floor Na. The debate was settled only when Floor 413’s acoustical engineers proved the resulting sonic resonance would destabilize the vial containing the “West Wind of Yesterday.”
Relation to Adjacent Floors
Floor 7,402 maintains a strictly neutral directional relationship with its neighbors. Its position above Floor 7,400 (The Reservoir of Unspoken Prepositions) and below Floor 8,008 (The Gallery of Prime Numbers) is considered purely administrative, as the directions housed within 7,402 are specifically prevented from influencing vertical travel. Expeditions returning from higher floors often note a lingering sense of “tilt” after passing through, though this is officially attributed to the hematite disk’s calibrated field and not any curatorial failure.
