Floor Na
MS 3612.47 · Places and structures
Floor Na is an alphanumeric indexing and classification floor positioned between Floor 207 (the Canted Halls) and Floor 404. Its designation is a standardized abbreviation for "Non-Alpha," signifying its primary function as the central registry for all holdings designated by non-Latin alphabetical systems. Floor Na administers the cataloguing of materials marked with Cyrillic, Glagolitic, Armenian, Georgian, and Coptic scripts, among others, as per Seventh Concordance Annex 14, Clause 7. It does not, however, handle logographic or syllabic systems, which are the purview of Floor 1001.
Physical Layout and Function
The floor is structured as a radial series of scriptorium wings, each dedicated to a specific script family. A central rotunda, known as the Point of Reconciliation, houses the translation matrices that attempt to establish provisional equivalencies between non-Latin holdings and the Tower's primary Latin-indexed system. The air carries a persistent scent of ozone and drying vellum. Processing stations are manned by clerks of the Special Collections Directorate, who are trained in at least two non-Latin scripts and one auxiliary cipher system.
All materials destined for floors cataloguing non-Latin subjects must first pass through Floor Na for verification, tagging, and the assignment of a provisional cross-reference number. This process is notorious for its delays; a standing memorandum from the Directorate (Ref. Na-881-34) notes that the average processing time for a Georgian-script folio is 14 working days, not accounting for "disputes of graphical intent."
The Na-7-Δ-Ω Controversy
A persistent scholarly dispute concerns the floor's jurisdictional boundary with Floor 7-Δ-Ω. The Third Concordance explicitly assigns "all non-Roman alphabetic characters" to Floor Na (Clause 202). However, a later amendment to the Seventh Concordance (Annex 22) states that "dedicated philological anomaly floors retain primacy over constituent parts." Proponents of Floor 7-Δ-Ω's authority argue that its unique Greek-letter hybrid designation places any material marked with a Greek character under its remit, effectively creating a loophole for hundreds of holdings. This has led to a protracted procedural stalemate, with crates of materials marked with, for example, a delta or an omega remaining in a holding bay on Floor 22, unmoved for decades.
Notable Holdings and Transfers
Floor Na's most famous processed item is the so-called "Kiev Fragment," a single vellum sheet in an early Cyrillic hand that describes, in poetic terms, a staircase that descends only when no one is looking at it. After 11 years of analysis on Floor Na, it was transferred to Floor 1117, where its described properties were found to be congruent with that floor's known spatial reversals. The floor also maintains the "Armenian Apologia" scrolls, which are not catalogued for their content but for the peculiar fact that their illuminated borders depict Librarians engaged in impossible tasks, such as shelving water or reading silence.
A significant portion of the Floor 909 Provisional Protocol Summaries originated here, translated from Glagolitic administrative digests recovered from a collapsed annex on Floor 412.
Operational Challenges
The primary operational challenge on Floor Na is the Doctrine of Untranslatability, as outlined in the Fifth Concordance. The Doctrine holds that certain concepts encoded in a non-Latin script lose their essential quality—or, conversely, generate a new, unintended quality—when forced into a Latin equivalency. To mitigate this, Floor Na clerks are required to append a "Linguistic Integrity Caveat" to every processed item, a boilerplate text that absolves the Tower of any ontological drift incurred during translation. The practical effect is that many holdings on floors like Floor 303 the Aviary of Static or Floor 308 are listed with both their original script and their translated title, the latter often bearing only a familial resemblance to the former.
Relationship to Adjacent Floors
Floor Na receives its intake primarily from Floor 207 (the Canted Halls) and dispatches verified materials towards Floor 404, the designated 'non-manifest' holding floor. This relationship is not always linear; materials sometimes loop back from Floor 404 to Floor Na for re-evaluation if their non-alphabetic qualities are later deemed to have been mis-assessed. The corridor leading to Floor 317 is, by longstanding but unwritten agreement, never used for transit, as it is believed to cause a temporary scrambling of script memory in passing clerks. This belief is recorded in a footnote in the Central Index (Floor ), but is not codified in any Concordance.
