Residual Identifier

MS 9247.14 · Practices and doctrines

A Residual Identifier is a standardized alphanumeric code applied to any instance of Residual phenomena following its formal characterization and prior to its potential reclassification as an AR. It serves as the primary temporary reference for cataloguing, tracking, and cross-referencing Residual manifestations during the period of scholastic evaluation mandated by the Ruling on Residual Rhetoric.

Structure and Syntax

The standard Residual Identifier follows the pattern R-<Floor>-<Sequence>-<Instance>. The Floor component denotes the Tower level where the Residual was first formally observed and recorded, using its official Catalogue Number. The Sequence is a four-digit number assigned sequentially by the floor's local registry, resetting annually. The Instance is a three-letter suffix (e.g., ALP, GAM, OME) generated by the Infinite Stamp at the moment of provisional logging, intended to prevent identifier collisions.

For example, R-8812-0473-OME indicates the 473rd Residual provisionally catalogued on Floor 8812 in that cataloguing cycle, stamped with the suffix 'OME'. This structure allows any Residual's point of origin and procedural lineage to be immediately ascertained.

Procedural Function

The assignment of a Residual Identifier initiates the formal observation period required under Concordance Annex 7. During this phase, the Residual is monitored for adherence to the non-interference criterion defined in the Ruling on Residual Rhetoric. Its interactions—or lack thereof—with archival systems, environmental fixtures, and other Residuals are meticulously logged against its identifier. The identifier is used on all movement manifests, analysis requests, and inter-departmental correspondence, creating a complete procedural chain.

Only phenomena that receive a Residual Identifier are eligible for subsequent promotion to AR status. Phenomena deemed to be mere Residual Atmospherics or transient echoes are logged under a simpler Provisional Designation Number and do not progress to this stage.

Scholastic Disputes on Nomenclature

The requirement for a Residual Identifier is a point of contention between the School of Residual Imprints and the School of Residual Freedom. The Imprint school argues the identifier is a necessary administrative placeholder, a "bureaucratic placeholder for a shadow," treating the Residual as an object for study. In contrast, the Freedom school contends that the act of assigning an identifier constitutes an implicit recognition of the Residual as a distinct entity, however fragmented, and that the identifier should be considered part of the Residual's evolving "phenomenological signature." This debate is particularly acute in cases of Residual Motive Impressions, where the directional impulse may appear to respond to its assigned identifier in observational logs.

Concordance 12.8.4 states: "The Identifier is a hook upon which observation hangs; it confers no ontology." However, an amendment in Concordance 19.3.1 adds: "The hook may shape the hand that holds it."

Transition to Archival Status

If a Residual successfully passes its observation period without exhibiting volitional interference, it is recommended for AR classification. The Residual Identifier is then retired and superseded by a formal AR designation, which follows a different schema (e.g., AR-<Taxonomic Series>-<Accession>). The original Residual Identifier is archived in a cross-reference registry, linking the AR's finalized state back to its provisional observational data. Instances where a Residual dissipates, neutralizes itself, or violates the Rhetoric ruling during the identification period result in the identifier being marked "closed-incomplete" in the Master Register of Sequences.

Identifiers in Substructure Exploration

A specialized application of the Residual Identifier protocol is employed for phenomena encountered during authorized Descent Identifier expeditions. These identifiers are prefixed with 'DS-' (e.g., DS-R-<Descent Code>-<Sequence>) and are governed by the stricter observational frameworks of the Descent charters. The atmospheric and structural instability of the substructure often produces Residuals of unusual longevity or complexity, making their identifiers critical for mapping potentially recursive or hazardous phenomena. The legal authority of a Descent Identifier extends to the management of any Residual Identifiers assigned within its operational purview.
