The Archival Designation

The Archival Designation is the foundational administrative unit for the cataloguing of all material, procedural, and conceptual holdings within The Tower. It is a formal, alphanumeric identifier which, upon its issuance by a certified Librarian, confers provisional ontological stability upon the designated subject for the purposes of archival processing, retrieval, and cross-reference. The act of designation does not imply external existence, but establishes an entity’s reality within the Tower’s administrative framework.

Structure and Syntax

The canonical form of an Archival Designation is defined in Clause 1 of the First Concordance, though subsequent amendments across seventeen supplemental Concordances have introduced numerous exceptions and special cases. The standard syntax is a series of fields separated by full stops: Category-Series.Floor.Sequence.Variant.

For example, the designation PD.7.8812.α breaks down as follows: PD (Paradox Designation, a Category-Series), 7 (referencing the administrative floor where the paradox was first logged), 8812 (the sequential entry number within that floor’s paradox ledger), and α (an alphabetic variant marker, in this case indicating the primary spore sample from the Soporific Spore Incident). The Floor component does not necessarily indicate physical location, but rather the jurisdictional authority responsible for the initial cataloguing.

Procedural Activation

Designation is not a passive act of labeling, but an active bureaucratic procedure. A subject becomes eligible for designation upon its presentation to a Librarian Corps intake desk, its discovery during a shelf audit, or its generation as a procedural byproduct (such as Archival Dust). The assigning Librarian must complete Form Λ-7, “Intent to Designate,” which includes fields for provisional description, proposed category, and any immediate cross-references to existing holdings. Upon submission, the designation is provisionally activated and entered into the Central Folio.

This activation grants the subject several key rights and obligations within Tower law, including: the right to be stored in a non-contradictory location relative to its categorical peers; the obligation to maintain consistent descriptive metadata; and the right to be cited in subsequent scholarly disputes. A designation is only considered fully vested after a mandatory 90-day review period, as per Ordinance Gamma-7, overseen by the Guild of Dormant Scribes.

Categories and Special Series

The Category-Series field is the most semantically loaded component of a designation. Common categories include:

• PD (Paradox Designation): For historical, logical, or causal inconsistencies. Their archival locations are often randomized to prevent conceptual contamination.
• AE (Anomalous Entity): For objects or phenomena that defy standard taxonomic placement.
• SP (Standard Protocol): For official procedures, forms, and administrative guidelines.
• FL (Floral/Fungal Log): For botanical and mycological specimens, such as lumen-moss.
• AR (Archival Residual): For byproducts of archival work, including several classes of Archival Dust.

Notable special series include the Iso series for inert construction materials (e.g., the substrate for Iso 8812 columns), and the Silvanus series used internally by the Department of Arboreal Reckoning.

Designation Drift and Reclassification

A persistent scholarly issue is designation drift, wherein the meaning or referent of a designation subtly changes over time due to clerical error, cumulative amendments to its descriptive folio, or ontological leakage from adjacent holdings. The Academy of Archival Protocol maintains a subcommittee dedicated to measuring and, where possible, correcting such drift. Full reclassification—changing the Category-Series of a vested designation—requires a majority vote of the sitting Librarians and an amendment to the relevant Concordance, a process famously protracted.

The case of Hieronymous Selvage is often cited: his theory of “designation resonance” proposed that the numbering of The Spiral Stacks was not arbitrary, but a harmonic reflection of the designations stored within them. While this was dismissed by the Measurer-Scribes for lacking quantitative rigor, it influenced the procedural safeguards now in place for designating new spirals.

Disputes and Null Designations

Conflicts often arise when two distinct designations are applied to what is argued to be the same subject, or when a single designation is argued to refer to multiple distinct subjects. These disputes are adjudicated in the Hall of Unresolved Queries, with rulings based on precedent and Concordance citation. A more severe outcome is the issuance of a Null Designation (ND), a formal revocation which strips a subject of its archival reality. The process, detailed in Annex Δ (Delta), involves sequestering the physical holding (if any), redacting all folio entries, and filing the empty designation shell in the Sub-basement of Unanswerable Petitions. The most famous nullification was that of “The Seventh Lamp of Yr,” though the reasons for its nullity are themselves classified under a separate PD.

The system, for all its complexity, is considered essential to the Tower’s function. As noted in the commentary to the Seventh Concordance, “A thing without a designation is a ghost in the stacks; a designation without a thing is a door waiting for a key.” The continuous expansion and maintenance of this system is the primary work of the Librarianate, and the reason the Tower Calendar marks time in units of “designation cycles” rather than years.
