Core Identifier

MS 1224.43 · Practices and doctrines

A Core Identifier is a unique alphanumeric designation assigned to any foundational, axiomatic, or otherwise irreducible concept under review within the scholastic departments of The Tower. It serves as the primary referent for all subsequent derivative, contingent, or applied analyses, as mandated by Clause 17.3 of the Third Concordance.

Structure and Nomenclature

The canonical form of a Core Identifier is defined in Annex 7-B as a tripartite sequence: a three-letter conceptual root (CR), a four-digit sequence number (SN), and a single-letter status suffix (SS). For example, the identifier ONT-1147-A denotes the 1147th instance of an ontological axiom assigned active (A) status. The conceptual root is drawn from a closed lexicon of 78 permitted stems, such as ONT (ontological), EPI (epistemological), LOG (logical), or TAX (taxonomical). The sequence number is assigned chronologically upon submission to the Central Dimensional Register, while the status suffix indicates its current scholastic standing: A (Active), P (Provisional), S (Suspended), or R (Rescinded).

It is critical to distinguish a Core Identifier from a Provisional Designation (PD), a Manifestation Index Number, or a Catalogue Number. While the latter are used for transient phenomena, inventory items, or archival holdings, a Core Identifier is reserved for principles considered fundamental to a given line of inquiry. As the Ordinance of Perpetual Transference states, “The Core shall bear the weight of all contingent designations.”

Procedural Mandate

The assignment of a Core Identifier triggers a mandatory cascade of subsidiary identifications. Per Clause 9 of the Tenth Concordance, any Procedural Echo, Residual phenomenon, or Descent route generated from the core concept must incorporate the Core Identifier as its prefix. This creates a traceable lineage. For instance, the experimental protocol derived from core axiom LOG-0021-A would be logged in the Master Register of Sequences as LOG-0021-A/PE-441.

The application process is overseen by the Office of Conceptual Primitives on Floor 308, which maintains the Master Register of Core Identifiers. A successful application requires the submission of a Formal Axiom Statement, countersigned by no fewer than three recognized scholastic departments, and proof that the concept cannot be decomposed into any existing, identifier-bearing cores without loss of essential meaning.

Controversies and Disputes

The most frequent scholastic disputes concerning Core Identifiers revolve around the criteria for “irreducibility.” The Seventh Concordance defines it as “a conceptual unit that cannot be rendered as a function of two or more prior cores,” while the Twelfth Concordance insists on a more pragmatic test: “that which, if removed, causes the collapse of no fewer than seven derivative Catalog Entries.” This contradiction has led to protracted legal battles, such as the famous case of TAX-5543, whose status oscillated between Active and Rescinded for forty-seven years before being settled by arbitration.

A further, unresolved tension exists between Core Identifiers and the system of Spiral Designations. Proponents of the Spiral system argue that all conceptual cores are, by nature, positional and relative to an observer’s Geometron, and thus should be denoted by a Spiral Notation coordinate rather than an alphanumeric string. This schism is most evident in the rival cataloguing practices of the Eastern and Western Mutable Stacks.

Notable Examples

Among the most cited Core Identifiers is ONT-0001-A, “The Principle of Archivability,” which underpins the Tower’s entire mission. Its derivative chains are vast, linking to thousands of Phenomenological Signatures and Documented Contingencies such as TC1-308-Δ. Another is EPI-2047-P, “The Uncertainty of Unobserved Floors,” which remains in Provisional status despite being foundational to all sanctioned descent expeditions.

The identifier LOG-0999-S, “The Law of Excluded Tertium,” was famously Suspended after the discovery of the Infinite Stamp, which demonstrated a consistent third state incompatible with binary logic. Its suspension required the re-issuance of over twelve thousand subsidiary designations, an event logged as Incident-Sigma 45 in the Central Dimensional Register.

Related Practices

The Core Identifier system interfaces with, but does not replace, other identifier frameworks. A Reference Designator for a physical location may cite a Core Identifier in its rationale documentation. An Ir Number for an apparatus may be linked to a core concept that justifies its construction. Similarly, an Archival Designation may be applied to a document that contains a formal statement of a core concept, while the concept itself retains its own Core Identifier.

All amendments to the status of a Core Identifier, and all petitions for new assignments, must be submitted with the appropriate Luminous Signatures and filed under a unique Docket Mark in the Inventory of Proposed Holdings. This ensures the chain of causality and scholastic lineage remains intact, from the irreducible core to its outermost contingent manifestations.
