Manifestation Index Number
MS 1273.55 · Practices and doctrines
The Manifestation Index Number (MIN) is the primary identifier assigned to a phenomenon that has entered the Tower's cataloguing systems through the process of Spontaneous Manifestation or directed Physical Manifestation. It formally acknowledges the phenomenon's stabilized reality within the archival domain and provides its structural location within the MIAC framework.
Structure and Assignment
A complete MIN follows the format Series-Spiral.Floor/Aperture-Manifestation Sequence. For example, MIN M-7.2001/δ-447 denotes a manifestation from Series M (Material), assigned to Spiral 7, Floor 2001, aperture delta, as the 447th manifestation logged at that coordinate. The Series prefix is drawn from the Central Index Column, with common designations including M (Material), R (Resonant), C (Conceptual), and T (Temporal). The Spiral and Floor coordinates are derived from the Third Spiral Index, while the Aperture refers to the specific archival chamber or indexing node where the manifestation solidified.
Assignment is performed by an Index-Tender upon confirmation of a manifestation's stability, which is typically gauged by its adherence to local physical laws and its demonstrable interaction with at least one other catalogued item. The act of inscribing the MIN on the phenomenon's primary housing—or, in the case of non-corporeal phenomena, on its designated Satellite Index slate—completes the formal recognition process outlined in Ordinance 707.
Relationship to Other Identifiers
The MIN supersedes all temporary designations. A phenomenon typically receives a Provisional Designation Number upon initial detection, followed by an Ir Number once its petition for reality is accepted by the Clerks. The MIN is only issued after the phenomenon passes through the Auditory Phase and is awarded its final Catalogue Number. In this hierarchy, the MIN is considered the positional identifier, while the Catalogue Number serves as the permanent custodial tag. The relationship is often described as "the MIN tells you where it is; the Catalogue Number tells you what it is."
Notably, the MIN is also distinct from a Provisional Holding Number (PHN), which is used for archival materials of uncertain provenance, not for spontaneously generated entities.
Disputes and Anomalies
The primary scholarly controversy regarding MINs concerns their permanence. The Axiom of Inevitable Manifestation implies that once assigned, an MIN is irrevocable. However, the Schism of the Unfinished Index cited instances where manifested phenomena later demanifested, leaving behind "hollow" MINs in the indices that reference non-existent entities. Reformists argue these should be purged or marked with an obelus, while traditionalists, citing Concordance 12.45.7, maintain that the index entry itself possesses a reality that must be preserved.
A well-known anomaly is the MIN cluster associated with the Silent Index. Manifestations within its sphere are often assigned MINs with a null Aperture value (e.g., R-5.900/-), as their point of origin cannot be spatially fixed. These are filed under a special Sympathetic Floor Index clause.
Operational Protocols
Per the Index Column Protocol, all MINs for a given Spiral are logged in triplicate: on the local Floor index, at the Central Index Column for that Spiral, and within the relevant Sub-Index, if the manifestation has predictive qualities. The Recontextualization Index number, assigned during Material Recontextualization, is often appended to an existing MIN as a suffix to track state changes.
The generation of the Manifestation Sequence segment of the MIN is governed by a Chain Sequence Number algorithm, ensuring no duplication within a single Aperture. This system famously faltered during the Gamma Fork Incident on Floor 2001, where identical tuning forks manifested simultaneously in aperture delta, both attempting to claim sequence number 447. The incident was resolved by applying a temporal subscript to the MIN of the second fork.
Historical Notes
The MIN system was formally codified in the 3rd Cycle, replacing the older "Locale-Tag" system which relied on descriptive text. Its integration with the Spiral Index and the Master Index of Active Conditional's truth reels created the unified locating system in use today. Early MINs, particularly those from the First Survey period, often lack Spiral notation and are considered "floating assignments." These are the subject of ongoing rectification projects, though progress is slow due to the perpetually tabled nature of the relevant oversight committee.
