Catalog Number CN-447-G
MS 7859.87 · Objects and instruments
Catalog Number CN-447-G is the permanent catalog designation issued by the Office of Provenance to the Standard Tuning Fork, Pattern Gamma, a struck-metal reference implement of the Fourth Acoustic Recension. The suffix -G denotes the seventh generation of that instrument's lineage and is not an abbreviation of any word. Catalog Number CN-447-G is the earliest object in the CN subseries and the only one whose designation has never been amended, suspended, or vacated, a distinction recorded with some pride in the Office's annual return for Catalog Year 34,489.
The number is frequently confused with the tuning fork it designates. The Office has ruled on this no fewer than four times.
Issuance and the Registry
Objects are not assigned a number of the CN form on filing. A new implement enters the registry as a Provisional Designation Number and remains provisional for a period of not less than nine Catalog Quarters while the Verifier Cadre responsible attests to its behaviour. Only on certification is the object granted a permanent number and entered in the Central Catalog under Class C, Subclass 44. The tuning fork's provisional designation, PD-447, appears to have been carried for eleven years — a delay the registry has never satisfactorily explained, and which auditors of the Deep Catalog continue to cite as the origin of the subseries.
The full canonical form of the designation, per the practice of Item Designation, is written as a Floor Number/Item Number-Lineage Marker: floor of deposit, local catalog number, lineage generation. CN-447-G is therefore properly read as Class C, Number 447, Generation G. Where the fork is currently held is a matter of some delicacy and is treated below.
The Instrument
The Pattern Gamma fork is struck once with a Verifier Cadre's issued mallet and sounded against the reference tone of the floor on which it is used. It is a heavy object — some 340 grams in the fourth recension, though weights vary by generation — and is carried in a fitted cradle inside every Catalog Number T-44b kit. Clause 6 of Directive 301.12 requires that the fork be struck before a floor is recorded as un-numbered, and struck again afterwards.
Generations A through F are superseded and held, where they survive, in the acoustic reserve at level seventeen. The reserve is not visited. Any member of a Verifier Cadre who seeks entry must first surrender their mallet at the door.
The Question of the Suffix
A long-standing disagreement turns on what the -G signifies. The Third Concordance, Annex 2, holds that the suffix belongs to the object — that the Pattern Gamma was cast, not assigned, as a generation and carries its lineage intrinsically. The Fifth Concordance, in a recension of Catalog Year 34,301, takes the contrary view: that all suffixes are applied by the Office after the fact and reflect nothing about the instrument's manufacture, and that to speak of a fork "being" a generation is a category error of the kind prohibited under Catalog Designation. Neither annex has been withdrawn. Both are bound into the working copy of the Central Catalog, one facing the other.
"The suffix is the Office's, not the metal's. A fork does not know what it is called."
— Fifth Concordance, Annex 7, gloss on Catalog Designation
The practical consequence is small but persistent: two fork-records in the Deep Catalog carry the same local number under different suffixes, and reconciling them is the task of a standing committee that has not met since the winter of Catalog Year 34,412.
The Affair of the Knob
CN-447-G occupies an unusually prominent place in the Tower's records of error. When a Cadre is dispatched to The Door to No Floor, the Catalog Number T-44b kit is scrutinized item by item against its manifest, and the fork is checked first. In Catalog Year 34,488 a Cadre at the Door returned a kit in which the fork had been replaced by Catalog #47-Delta-9, the non-functional brass knob belonging to the Door itself. The discrepancy surfaced only at the second striking. The Cadre's account, filed without evident embarrassment, stated that the knob "rang truer than the fork on that floor," and asked that the substitution be recorded as a finding rather than a loss.
The Office declined the finding and opened a loss inquiry. The inquiry ran for two years and closed without recovering the fork. Its final minute is preserved and reads, in full: "The knob has been returned to the Door. The fork has not been returned to the kit." The episode is the reason the pre-dispatch manifest now requires the fork to be laid on the table beside the kit before any door is opened.
Status in the Register
Catalog Number CN-447-G remains active. It has never been classed as Absent Without Catalog, though its physical location has been listed as "present" without further specification for eleven consecutive returns. The Office's position, restated each year, is that a designation of this standing does not lapse for want of a shelf.
Inquiries concerning the fork's whereabouts should be directed to the Office of Provenance on level four, which will confirm that the designation is sound and that no further information is available. Visitors are reminded that the reserve on level seventeen does not admit mallets.
