Central Index Column
MS 9116.02 · Objects and instruments
The Central Index Column is the administrative, physical, and referential nexus for index management, as defined by The Index Column Protocol. It is the singular instantiation of the Index Column concept from which all procedural and structural authority derives. Located on Floor 33-Δ within Central Index, its primary functions are the archival of the master scroll of the Central Index, the authentication of amendment sigils, and the ceremonial alignment of all official queue formations.
Physical Description
The Column is a monolith of polished black basalt, standing 4.2 meters tall with a circumference of 3.14 meters. Its surface is incised with helical grooves that correspond to the seven primary spiral designations of the Tower's vertical transport network. The apex features the Inlay of Final Reference, a circular disc of electrum into which amendment sigils are pressed for authentication by the Master Index. The Column stands upon the Ceremonial Plinth, a white marble dais measuring precisely 2 by 2 meters, which is itself the subject of the annual Plinth Integrity Survey.
Primary Functions
The Column's roles are tripartite, as codified in Annex 7 of the Third Concordance.
- Archival Nexus: It houses the master scroll of the Central Index within a hermetically sealed chamber accessed via a series of counter-rotating gears. This scroll is the canonical source for all subordinate indices, including the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies and the Index of Unresolved Imperatives.
- Sigil Authentication: All amendments to any Index must receive physical impression into the Inlay of Final Reference. A successful authentication is marked by a resonant chime audible throughout Floor 33-Δ; a failed attempt results in a sub-audible hum and the temporary closure of the nearest Pneumatic Conduit Array node.
- Queue Alignment: The Column serves as the theoretical and practical anchor point for all formal queue formations. The Protocol states that queues must "spiral concentrically outward from the Column's western aspect," a rule that necessitates frequent recalibration due to interference from the nearby ventilation shaft.
Historical Amendments and the Resonance Mandate
The Third Concordance introduced the controversial requirement for tri-hourly "resonance saturation measurements" to be taken at the Column. This mandate, Clause 8812-γ, stipulated that a designated Perpetual Indexer must log a "resonance saturation index" derived from the output of the Whispering Column (442–17). These logs were originally recorded on the Column itself, leading to the now-obsolete designation "Iso 8812 Column." While the practice of inscribing measurements directly onto the Column was abolished by the Eighth Amendment to the Concordance, the requirement to log the index persists. The current method involves depositing the tri-hourly data slip into the Central Index Column's dedicated intake aperture, which feeds the Sympathetic Floor Index.
Jurisdictional Disputes
A persistent scholarly disagreement concerns the Column's relationship to vertical transport. The Central Ascension Column provides primary access to upper floors via spirals 205–211, leading some archivists to argue that the Index Column's helical grooves imply a dormant or ceremonial transport function. This "Latent Ascension Theory" is vehemently opposed by traditionalists who cite the Index Column Protocol, which explicitly states the Column is "a referential object, fixed and immovable." The dispute is typically resolved, per custom, by citing contradictory Concordances, resulting in no change to operational practice.
Ceremonial and Administrative Role
Beyond its daily functions, the Central Index Column is the site of the Quarterly Concordance. During this ceremony, the Master Index reads aloud amendments to the Index while petitioners form the mandated concentric queue. The most recent such ceremony saw the formal designation of the Sub-Index of Unfulfilled Prophecies under the sigil Σ-I-UP, as per the Index Column Protocol. The Column also serves as the final arbiter in cases of indexical drift; any entry whose referential integrity is questioned must be brought before the Column for a Verdict of Cohesion, a process that can take several fiscal cycles.
Notable Anomalies
Recorded anomalies associated with the Column include the "Silent Hour" of 211-09-15, when the Column failed to produce an authentication chime for precisely sixty minutes, coinciding with a temporary stasis in all pneumatic dispatch systems. The official inquiry attributed the event to an unscheduled harmonic dampening exercise originating from Central Ventilation Shaft Epsilon-9. Furthermore, the Column's shadow, when cast by the fixed luminescence of Floor 33-Δ, does not align with the grooves inscribed upon its surface, a geometric impossibility that is listed in the annexes of the Central Index as "Anomaly 33-Δ.01: To be reconciled."
