Descent Identifier
MS 3880.74 · Practices and doctrines
Descent Identifiers are the unique alphanumeric codes assigned to all authorized routes into the substructure of The Tower. Governed by the Descent Protocols and administered by the Directorate of Descent, a Descent Identifier serves as both a legal charter and a navigational schema for sanctioned downward exploration.
The system was formally codified under the Tenth Concordance, which established the tripartite format now in standard use. Each complete identifier consists of a Root Designation, a Sequence Number, and an Iteration Marker, rendered as, for example, Δ-7-22. The Root Designation (e.g., Delta, Sigma, Theta) denotes the class of protocol and its associated risk profile and preparatory requirements. The Sequence Number is assigned sequentially within each root class from the Master Register of Sequences. The Iteration Marker indicates the version of the protocol, as amendments are not uncommon following post-descent debriefings.
Authorization and Custody
The generation and assignment of a Descent Identifier is the sole prerogative of the Directorate of Descent, specifically the Warden of Descent. An application for descent, structured as a set of Proposed Descent Particulars, must be submitted to the Directorate. Upon approval, the Warden selects an appropriate Root Designation from active classifications, consults the Master Register for the next available Sequence Number, and assigns an initial Iteration Marker (typically beginning at '1'). The resulting identifier is then inscribed upon the sanctioned copy of the Descent Protocol document, which is held in perpetuity by the Directorate. The Ordinance of Perpetual Transference further mandates that a corresponding Catalog Designation be created for all physical and logbook evidence recovered under that identifier, creating a permanent bureaucratic linkage.
Functional Role
Beyond its administrative function, the Descent Identifier operates as a practical tool throughout the descent process. All equipment pre-approved for the journey is stamped with the identifier, which serves as its Ir Number for inventory tracking. Communications from the descent team must prefix all reports with the identifier. Perhaps most critically, the identifier is used to key into specific Recursive Descent anchor points and environmental stabilizers believed to be embedded within the Tower's substructure; inputting an invalid or unapproved code at these apertures is purported to have consequences ranging from simple denial of access to topological dissolution of the immediate vicinity.
Disputes and Anomalies
The system is not without its contradictions. The Ninth Concordance, which deals with archival contingency, references "ascent identifiers" in several clauses, a category not recognized by the later Tenth Concordance and for which no active registry exists. Scholars from the Librarian adjunct of Comparative Verticality argue this implies a lost parallel system for upward travel, while the Directorate maintains it is a scribal error referring to cataloguing prefixes for specimens retrieved from altitude.
Furthermore, certain identifiers appear in legacy logs without corresponding originals in the Directorate's vaults. The most famous of these is the Sigma-1 series, documented in several secondary sources as a foundational set of explorations, yet the primary Protocol documents are listed as "Transferred to Indeterminate Custody per Clarification 19.b to the Guided Descent of Clause 19." Whether this represents a loss, a classification above the Directorate's clearance, or a procedural fiction remains a subject of formal inquiry logged in the Cartographic Redress Docket under case Δ-12.
Provisional and Experimental Identifiers
For descents of an exploratory or particularly hazardous nature, a Provisional Designation may be issued preceding the formal assignment of a full Descent Identifier. These PD codes are temporary and are either upgraded to a full identifier upon the mission's successful return or retired if the descent is catalogued as a Documented Contingency. Additionally, the Directorate has, on seven recorded occasions, authorized the use of "Experimental Identifiers" bearing an Omega (Ω) Root Designation. These are used for routes that theoretically violate standard spatial axioms of the Tower, such as descents into formally documented non-spaces. All Omega-class identifiers are subject to immediate review by a full Conclave of Senior Librarians upon the team's return, if one occurs.
Related Practices
The philosophy of the Descent Identifier system echoes broader classificatory practices within the Tower. Its tripartite structure mirrors the system used for Catalog Designations in the Mutable Stacks, and its function as a unique key for a sanctioned procedure is analogous to the Process Designation system used in ritual kitchens and scriptorium automation. The integrity of the identifier is considered paramount; falsifying, forging, or using a decommissioned Descent Identifier is, under the Descent Protocols Practice, grounds for permanent revocation of descent privileges and re-assignment to surface-level taxonomical duties.
