Log of the Downward Seeking

MS 2932.75 · Documents and ordinances

Log of the Downward Seeking is the official title for the bound, perpetually incomplete ledger maintained by the Librarian Corps of the Lower Descent to document phenomena, environmental shifts, and cataloguing anomalies encountered during Guided Descents into the Lower Stacks. Its status as a living document is formalized under Amendment Annex Σ.7, which stipulates that its entries are to be treated as provisional evidence, not definitive record.

Purpose and Authority

Initiated following the Third Survey of the Spiral Foundation (conducted 14-28 Lyra in the Year of the Unblinking Eye), the Log serves a dual mandate. Primarily, it functions as a navigational and procedural adjunct to the Petitions of Ontological Precedent, providing the empirical observations necessary to support or refute petitions for the reclassification of lower-floor holdings. Secondarily, it acts as an early-warning registry for environmental inconsistencies, such as the first officially recorded Screaming Pillar (Log Entry 440, Sub-clause 9). Its authority is secondary to the Master Log of Amendments, and any observation entered into the Log that is subsequently ratified by a Libranian tribunal must be transferred to the Master Log, rendering the original entry void.

Structure and Format

The Log is divided into seven perpetual columns:

  1. Descent Identifier: The official call-sign of the Guided Descent (e.g., GD-891-Sigma).
  2. Floor of Origin & Target Depth: The starting floor and intended lowest point of the expedition.
  3. Observed Phenomena: A concise, non-interpretive description of the catalogued anomaly.
  4. Apparent Concordance Contradiction: The specific clause of any Concordance the observation appears to violate.
  5. Proposed Provisional Classification: A suggested temporary taxonomy, pending review.
  6. Librarian-in-Charge Attestation: The signature and spiral-seal of the supervising Librarian.
  7. Status: One of: Active, Archived to Master Log, Referred to Hall of Unresolved Queries, or Redacted per Dispute.

Entries are made in iron-gall ink on vellum processed from the parchment-moths of Floor 19 (The Whispering Galleries), which is noted for its resistance to damp and temporal dilution.

Notable Entries and Precedents

Several entries have achieved particular notoriety within procedural scholarship:

  • Entry 891-Sigma: This descent's records were so voluminous and contradictory they necessitated the creation of a separate Post-Incident Debriefing Log. The main Log entry consists of a single line: "See subsidiary document. Consensus unavailable."
  • Entry 1022: Records the "Temporary Inversion of the Silent Stair" between Floors 300 and 302, where footfalls were heard precisely 4.7 seconds before a foot was placed. The entry was Archived to the Master Log after a 12-year review, establishing precedent for non-linear acoustic phenomena.
  • Entry 440, Sub-clause 9: The aforementioned first recording of a Screaming Pillar, initially classified as an "atmospheric vibration." Its reclassification to a "structural lament" was a direct result of the Log's evidence being cited in Petition 4409.

Dispute Regarding Terminal Entries

A persistent scholarly disagreement concerns the finality of entries marked "Archived to Master Log." The Spiral Clerks maintain that archiving represents a conclusive transfer of authority, rendering the Log's original entry a mere draft. The Librarians of Contradiction, however, cite Amendment Annex Σ.7's "provisional evidence" clause to argue that the original observation, contextually frozen in the Log, retains a latent evidentiary power that the sanitized, ratified Master Log entry lacks. This debate is most active in cases where a Master Log amendment is later itself amended, calling into question the validity of the original observation's transfer. The matter is currently listed as Imperative 88-Delta in the Index of Unresolved Imperatives.

Access and Protocol

Physical access to the Log requires a Grade-4 Provisional Research Permit and must be supervised by a Librarian of the Third Spiral or higher. Consultation is typically granted in the Vestibule of the Lower Ledgers, adjacent to the Vestibule of Provisional Tenancy. Under no circumstances may a page be removed; transcription is permitted only onto approved foolscap issued by the Quartermaster of the Spiral Stacks. Digital or mnemonic copies are strictly prohibited by the Seventh Concordance, Clause 101 ("The Impermanence of Certainty"). The Log itself is stored in a climate-controlled stack on Floor 88, ironically sharing a chamber with the Log of Unanswered Questions, though the two documents are never to be consulted concurrently.
