Routing
MS 4614.14 · Practices and doctrines
The Librarians define Routing as the process of determining the definitive physical or metaphysical path a petition, object, or conceptual entity must follow through the Tower's architecture to reach its prescribed destination, resolution state, or state of archival stasis. It is distinct from mere transit or delivery, being an a priori adjudication of possibility space. As per the Third Concordance, Part II, Clause 3., "All that exists within the Tower is in motion toward its terminus; routing is the calculus of that inevitability."
The authority for primary routing determinations rests with the Recursive Amendments Office, though this authority is frequently contested by the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild and the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild in matters pertaining to their respective domains. Routing failures are logged by the Warden of Descent and investigated by ad-hoc committees convened under the Concordance of Petitions, Clause 74.9β.
Primary Routing Modalities
Routing is generally categorized into five accepted modalities, as defined in the Third Concordance, Annex Δ.
- Physical Routing
- The movement of tangible objects, forms, and personnel via the Central Pneumatic Stacks, dumbwaiters, and designated transit corridors. Form L-17 is the standard instrument for initiating a physical routing request.
- Petitionary Routing
- The path assigned to a formal petition based on its subject matter, required level of authority, and precedential weight. The routing tables for unanswerable petitions are notoriously complex, deriving from the aforementioned Clause 74.9β.
- Conceptual Routing
- The directed flow of abstract concepts, memetic constructs, and unresolved arguments toward designated resonance chambers or damping vaults. The cant of Floor 207 is officially maintained by the Librarians as "functionally necessary for the routing of conceptual impedance."
- Auditory Routing
- The channeling of specific sounds, echoes, and formal grievances. Procedures are outlined in Concordance 7, Annex Ξ, which details the routing of auditory phenomena to specialized holdings such as Floor Ξ-12 and the Department of Audible Grievances.
- Epistolary Routing
- The authentication and pathfinding for correspondence, particularly from authors whose status is indeterminate or expunged. This falls under the purview of the Bureau of Epistolary Echoes.
Key Routing Infrastructure
The Tower's routing network relies on several critical nexuses.
- Floor 207 (The Canted Halls): Functions as the primary interlogistical junction for all upper-spiral routing. Its non-Euclidean geometry is essential for processing recursive petitionary loops.
- Central Pneumatic Stacks: The main artery for physical routing. All manifests use the Type designations codified in Concordance 89.
- Central Aperture: The central clearinghouse for pneumatic and tube-based communications. The western wall of Spiral 117, Aperture Delta, for instance, features 144 brass message tubes feeding directly into its routing hub.
- Index Column: While not a transit point itself, the Column's hourly updates are the primary data source for recalculating metaphysical routing paths.
Routing Failures and Anomalies
When a routed entity fails to arrive at its logged terminus, or arrives in an incorrect or paradoxical state, a Routing Anomaly is declared. Notable incidents include:
- The Incident at Floor 14,022 (Catalogued as Anomaly 14.022-Δ): A petitionary routing failure resulting from two carrels, generated from different existential seeds, temporarily resolving to the same harmonic interval, causing a localized superposition of jurisdictions.
- The perpetual mis-routing of Suggestions for Improved Tea Service from Intake 99,997 to the Furnace Flues of Spiral 002, despite seventeen reassessment petitions.
- The Quelling of the Riot of Floor 7,402, which was precipitated by a temporary collapse of conceptual routing protocols, leading directly to the establishment of Floor 207's current hardened routing protocol.
Procedural Certification
Any request to alter established conduit routing or approve new routing installations must be filed with the Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild for initial assessment, then forwarded to the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild for compliance review, before final approval can be issued by the Recursive Amendments Office. This tripartite process, established after Anomaly 14.022-Δ, is designed to prevent conflicts between geometric, legal, and archival feasibility. However, as noted in a dissenting opinion appended to the Third Concordance, Part VII, this division of responsibility often leads to "routing the request for routing approval into a self-referential loop," effectively duplicating the problem it seeks to prevent.
Scholarly Disputes
The predominant academic debate concerns the ontological priority of routing. The Formalist School, led by the Cartographers' Guild, holds that routing is a function of the Tower's fixed architecture—the paths exist, and are merely discovered. The Intentionalist School, aligned with the Bureau of Epistolary Echoes, argues that routing is generated in the moment of adjudication by the Librarians or their designated proxies, and that the infrastructure adapts retroactively. This conflict is most visible in the ongoing Contradiction Flagging of all references to "pre-established routes" in the Concordance of Petitions, which the Intentionalists claim is a categorical error. No resolution is pending.
"A thing properly routed ceases to be a problem and becomes a fact."
