Governing Principles
The theoretical basis for Disposition Routing is found in the Third Concordance, specifically sub-clause 42.γ, which states: "An object's being is contingent upon its situatedness; a disposition without a corresponding location is a petition without a route." This principle mandates that once a Disposition Code (e.g., "Archival - Perpetual," "Liquidation - Immediate," "Contested - Hold") is assigned, a routing solution must be generated and executed without procedural delay. The routing tables themselves are not published in a single document but are dynamically generated by the Clerk of Ways from precedent stored within the Concordance of Petitions, leading to frequent jurisdictional disputes.
The Routing Algorithm
The process initiates upon the formal attachment of a Static Retention Amp Disposition tag or the logging of a code in an object's ledger. The Clerk of Ways, a position within the Office of the Senior Undersecretary, consults the routing tables. These tables do not map to floor numbers, but to architectural conditions: "Aisle terminating in a north-facing blank wall," "Transfer floor with audible hum," "Chamber with a persistent draught from the southeast." The object is then placed into the Tower's conveyance system—a network of dumbwaiters, pneumatic tubes, and designated porters—with instructions to find a location matching the described conditions.
This system famously relies on the Tower's semi-conscious architecture to cooperate, a point of contention for the Instrumentalist School, which argues for more deterministic mechanical routing. Success is confirmed when the object's tag resonates audibly (a low chime) upon reaching its destination, a phenomenon noted in Annex Ω-7 of the Second Concordance.
Common Disposition Destinations
- Archival - Perpetual
- Routes to stacks where light falls only at a specific hour, never directly on the shelves. Common endpoint: The East Unbound Stacks.
- Liquidation - Immediate
- Routes to an incinerator shaft or a dissolution vat on a sub-basement floor. The routing for this code is the most direct and bypasses all Preferential Routing queues.
- Contested - Hold
- Routes to a neutral transfer floor, often one under the purview of the Triage Subcommittee for Ambiguous Architectonics, where the object awaits further adjudication.
- Referential - Cross-Index
- Routes cyclically through a series of related reading rooms, never settling, its path updated as new cross-references are added. This is the only disposition considered "active" rather than "terminal."
Jurisdictional Conflicts
Disposition Routing is a primary site of guild conflict. The Metaphorical Cartographers' Guild asserts that the routing based on architectural conditions is, in essence, a form of narrative cartography under their domain. Conversely, the Theoretical Jurisprudence Guild claims that the implementation of a legal disposition is a judicial act, not a logistical one. These conflicts often manifest as "routing alterations," where a guild will intercept and re-route an object to a location symbolically aligned with their philosophy, necessitating a full Contradiction Flagging review.
Furthermore, the Department of Voluntary Correspondence occasionally petitions for the right to use Disposition Routing channels for non-essential communication, arguing that all routed material is, in a broad sense, correspondence. These petitions are routinely denied but re-submitted every Procurement Cycle.
Failure and Recovery
A Disposition Routing failure is defined as an object failing to achieve resonant placement within 30 Tower days of code assignment. This triggers an investigation per the Concordance of Petitions, often involving retracing the intended route to diagnose the fault. Common causes include mis-identification of architectural conditions, active interference by a guild, or the object itself being classified as an Permitless Entity mid-route. Recovery protocols prioritize finding the object and re-initiating the routing from its last known location, though a significant minority of failures result in the object's disposition being downgraded to "Lost - Presumed Absorbed," effectively removing it from the administrative record.
In summary, Disposition Routing is the essential, if often contested, mechanism that binds the Tower's administrative judgments to its physical reality. It ensures that a decision made in the abstract realm of codes and concordances finds its concrete expression in the placement of a thing upon a shelf, in a shaft, or adrift in a permanent cross-indexical loop.
