Branch and Preserve
MS 1242.25 · Practices and doctrines
Branch and Preserve is the administrative doctrine governing the duplication of catalogue holdings across non-adjacent floors for the purpose of redundancy, as distinct from the ordinary Maintenance of a single holding in situ. First codified in the recension of Ordinance 88124 concerning the Inter-Departmental Liaison, the practice requires that any document or object deemed ontologically unstable be copied to at least two branches and held under conditions that Librarians' Procedural Branch judges adequate to Principle of Referential Integrity.
Origins and Early Recensions
The doctrine emerged from a dispute on Floor 909, where the Floor 909 Regulated Dampening had rendered the original Weeping Codex illegible to all but the Special Collections Directorate. In the 412th year of the Middle Scriptoria, Librarian-Prime Anselm proposed that select archives be removed to the Splenic Swamp for humidified preservation, a recommendation later distilled into the Branch and Preserve protocol by the Cartography Wing. The Third Concordance records the decision thus:
"That which weeps in one place shall be quieted in another, provided the copy is struck by the same hand that blotted the first."
— Third Concordance, Annex 11, Clause 2
Scholars note that Third Concordance does not adequately preserve the distinction between writing and correcting chronicles, and the above clause has been cited by the Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors as authority both for and against the Architectural Cadence Script.
Procedure and the Question of Light
A branch is established by the Disposition Routing office, a branch of Routing, which assigns the copy a floor number drawn from the Metaphysical Index rather than the sequential register. The luminous conditions of the receiving stack are assessed under the deprecated Candle-Branch system, the framework for quantifying the output of documented voids within archival stacks, pending review by the Guild of Luminal Regulators. During the temporary lapse of the Standard Lumen, the Candle-Branch system was the sole measure permitted for branch validation.
It is prohibited to branch a holding to a floor sharing its first two numerals with the origin floor. This rule, established by Administrative Law under Tower Law, exists because the Senior Metrologists determined in the year 778 that proximity invites sympathetic decay. A clerk of the Vault of Conditional Forms once branched the Apocryphal Set Theory to Sub-archive 72.8 in violation of this rule; both copies developed the same marginal tremor within nine days, requiring Spiral Maintenance of the Central Field.
Disputes Concerning Static Ontology
A standing disagreement divides the Normative Ontology office from the Substance Analysis desk on whether a branched holding inherits the Textual Purity of its source. The Static Ontology sub-branch holds that purity is preserved by Textual Alignment at the moment of strike, while Substance Analysis contends that the Quodlibet Alloy used in copying frames contaminates the copy irreversibly. The Vertical Sweep Y53925410 of the 992nd year returned no verdict, merely an inventory of 14,003 identical smudges.
Incident of the Weeping Duplicate
In the winter of the 1,203rd year, a branch of the Weeping Codex was established on the Translumine mezzanine under Ordinance 88124. The duplicate began weeping at a rate exceeding the original, prompting the Floor 909 Regulated Dampening to be extended by correspondential order. Librarian Cax of the Librarians' Procedural Branch filed a grievance stating that Clause 7 of the Procedural Branch's reading did not trigger Clause 911's conditions, as the weeping was "a property of the floor and not the folio." The grievance remains in the Sub-archive 72.8 unsealed.
Present Status
Branch and Preserve is administered jointly by the Special Collections Directorate and the Cartography Wing Procedural Branch, with disputes settled by citation of Concordance. Visitors to a branched holding may not request the original by floor number, as the two are held to be the same holding under Principle of Referential Integrity. A reader found doing so is provided the branch and a cup of water from the Splenic Swamp.
