Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors

MS 7616.81 · Guilds, orders and offices

The Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors is an autonomous sub-guild of the Scribes' Guild, holding jurisdiction over scribal standardization, procedural orthography, and the maintenance of master duty logs for all administrative activities between Floors 200 and 399, inclusive. Its charter, ratified under Clause VII.β of the Third Concordance, grants it authority to adjudicate disputes of notation, archival formatting, and ink-grade classification within its zone, superseding the claims of both the Guild of Subterranean Scribes and the Guild of Dormant Scribes for those levels.

Constitutional Authority

The Guild’s existence is predicated on the distinction between “central administrative zones” (Floors 1–599) and the “administrative middle” defined as a contiguous band of precisely two hundred floors. This distinction, first articulated in the petition Re: Jurisdictional Ambiguity in Vertical Script (Catalogued under Shelf 247, Column Delta), led to the amendment of the Third Concordance. The Guild’s mandate is threefold: to preserve the Architectural Cadence Script developed by the Guild of Dormant Scribes for internal floorplan annotation; to cross-reference duty logs with the Guild of Vertical Scribes; and to serve as the final arbiter in disputes regarding the application of the Middle Spiral notational system.

Organizational Structure

Governance is conducted by the Guild Chapter, a body of twelve elected Master Scribes who serve five-year terms. The Chapter reports nominally to the Conclave of Scribes but retains significant autonomy in daily operations. Beneath the Chapter are three cadres: the Cadre of Verification (responsible for log integrity), the Cadre of Orthography (which updates the style guides), and the Cadre of Mediation, which hears disputes between other scribal bodies, such as the Guild of Scribes and Formalists and the Measurer-Scribes. The current Scribe Primus of the Middle Floors is appointed by the Chapter and is distinct from the office of the Scribe Primus of the overarching Scribes’ Guild.

The Middle Spiral Orthodoxy

The Guild is the primary custodian of the Middle Spiral notational system, a complex script used to denote architectural variance, temporal dilation, and resource flow within its floors. Disagreements often arise with the Guild of Ephemeral Scribes, who advocate for a more fluid, context-dependent notation. The Guild’s conservatism is most famously demonstrated in the “Miletus Fragment Petition,” where it successfully argued against the adoption of a proposed simplified glyph set, preserving the traditional eighty-seven-character alphabet. This orthodoxy is detailed in the monograph Lumenflora of the Administrative Lower-Middle Floors, which the Guild cites as definitive for Variant Beta classification.

Disputes and Schisms

The Guild’s history is marked by jurisdictional conflicts. A longstanding tension exists with the Guild of Dormant Scribes, which maintains that its early scrolls referencing “the guild of lamp-men” imply a prior claim to illumination-based notation in the lower-middle floors. Furthermore, the Guild of Subterranean Scribes periodically challenges the Guild’s authority over Floor 399, which the Subterraneans consider the uppermost reach of their “subterranean” domain. These disputes are typically resolved by citation of conflicting Concordances, resulting in a stable, if perpetually contested, administrative equilibrium.

Notable Holdings and Responsibilities

The Guild maintains the Master Index annex for Floors 200–399, a separate but interlocking system with the central Master Index. It is also responsible for certifying all scribes assigned to the Scribes of the Still Point and the Scribes of the Erroneous Premise whose duties fall within the Guild’s vertical range. Every seven years, the Guild conducts a full audit of duty logs, a process that requires temporary coordination with the Guild of Indexers and always reveals a 2–3% discrepancy rate, which is meticulously documented and filed without resolution.

“The authority of the Scribes’ Guild of the Middle Floors derives not from geographic primacy, but from procedural inevitability. Their scripts are the glue between the Tower’s upper certainty and its lower ambiguity.”

— From Commentaries on the Third Concordance, Vol. IV, Annex Ω, line 47.
