Guild of Onomic Scribes
MS 3079.07 · Guilds, orders and offices
The Guild of Onomic Scribes is a specialized collegium within the Scribes' Guild responsible for the creation, amendment, and reconciliation of all onomastic designations—names, titles, and epithets—used in formal Tower documentation. Chartered under Concordance 712, Annex Γ, the Guild operates from the Vestibule of Designated Names on Floor 417, overseeing a system where the correct application of a name is considered to confer a specific and limited reality upon the named subject within the Tower’s jurisdiction.
Function and Jurisdiction
The Guild’s primary duty is the administration of the Onomasticon, the master ledger of all sanctioned names and their associated descriptive clauses. Any entity, from a newly discovered Spiral Staircase to a procedural concept like Temporal Inversion, Fourth Order, must be registered with the Guild before it can be cited in a Concordance, entered into the Master Index, or formally catalogued by Acquisition Scribes. The Guild does not judge the validity of a subject, only the propriety and non-contradiction of its designation. As Senior Onomic Scribe Elara of the Seventh Cadence famously noted in her Dissertation on Nominal Integrity, “The name is the first shelf upon which all subsequent facts are placed.”
This authority extends to resolving conflicts of nomenclature, such as the seventy-year dispute between the Guild of Vertical Scribes and the Guild of Subterranean Scribes over the proper designation for the atmospheric phenomenon known colloquially as “the Whisper in the West Wall.” The Guild’s final ruling, Onomic Decree 8417.Δ, assigned it the formal title “Pneumatic Resonance, Variant Sigma,” a decision which itself required three sub-decrees to define the permissible abbreviations.
Operational Structure
The Guild is divided into three cadres: the Creators, who propose new names and compose definitive descriptions; the Reconcilers, who audit existing entries for conflict and oversee amendments; and the Validators, who apply the final sigil of authorization. A proposed name must pass through all three cadres, a process detailed in Annex Γ, Clauses 12–47. Disputes within the Guild are adjudicated by a panel of five Master Scribes drawn from the Conclave of Scribes, though this has occurred only four times in recorded history.
The Guild maintains a close, though often tense, working relationship with the Guild of Indexers and the Guild of Dormant Scribes. The Indexers rely on the Onomasticon’s structure for their cross-referencing systems, while the Dormant Scribes’ preservation of older, lapsed names provides the historical data necessary for reconciliation. Disagreements most frequently arise over “legacy designations,” names from superseded concordances that newer Indexer protocols seek to expunge.
The Onomasticon and Material Reality
The central doctrine of the Guild, as codified in Clause 1, states: “A properly designated thing exists, for the purposes of the record, precisely as its designation permits.” This is not considered a statement about ontological truth, but a procedural axiom governing archival practice. For example, once the creature referred to in expedition logs as “the glass-feathered thrush” was formally registered as “Avis Vitrea, Sub-species Corvus,” subsequent Scribes were obligated to treat any mention of it as referring to a creature with specific vitreous properties, regardless of any individual scribe’s observations.
This leads to the phenomenon of “designation drift,” where the archival reality of a subject gradually diverges from the original observational reports that prompted its naming. The Guild views this not as error, but as refinement. The rival Guild of Scribes and Formalists has repeatedly criticized this stance, arguing in their Treatise on Foundational Epistemology that it “elevates the filing cabinet above the world it purportedly describes.”
Notable Controversies
The Guild’s most protracted internal debate concerns the “Miletus Fragment.” This shard of inscribed ceramic, discovered in a supply closet on Floor 309, bears what appears to be a partial name—either “-ilos” or “-ithos.” The Guild of Dormant Scribes filed the Miletus Fragment Petition, requesting that the fragment be recognized as a “pre-designation,” a name that existed prior to the current Onomastic system and thus holds superior, if obscure, authority. The Onomic Scribes have tabled the petition for eleven decades, arguing that an incomplete name cannot be reconciled with the existing ledger and therefore cannot be said to exist. The fragment itself resides in a locked case in the Vestibule, its unresolved status generating a minor but persistent schism within nominalist scholarship.
Relationship to Other Scribe Bodies
While autonomous in its domain, the Guild of Onomic Scribes is ultimately answerable to the broader Scribes' Guild. It provides quarterly reports to the Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors and its Validator cadre coordinates with the Guild of Ephemeral Scribes on matters of temporary or situational designations. Its work is distinct from, but sometimes confused with, that of the Guild of Inkshadow Scribes; the latter deal with the material inscription of names, while the Onomic Scribes govern their conceptual and legal weight. A proposed merger with the Scribes of the Erroneous Premise was abandoned after it was determined their respective mandates were “categorically incommensurate.”
The Guild’s influence is pervasive yet often invisible. Every entry in the Tower’s vast catalog rests, ultimately, upon a foundation of words authorized in the Vestibule of Designated Names, a fact the Guild quietly considers the most important fact of all.
