Acquisition Scribes

Acquisition Scribes

Acquisition Scribes are a specialized cadre of the Scribes' Guild of the Middle Floors responsible for the creation and validation of acquisition documentation. They are formally commissioned through the Bureau of Acquisition and operate under the direct oversight of the Directorate of Acquisition and Authentication. Unlike Master Scribes, whose work is broadly archival, or Dream-Scribes, who catalogue phenomenological anomalies, Acquisition Scribes are concerned exclusively with the procedural and evidentiary aspects of bringing an uncatalogued subject into the Tower’s holdings.

Procedural Mandate

The primary function of an Acquisition Scribe is to prepare, witness, and authenticate the Provisional Acquisition Docket. This document, once ratified, provides the legal basis for an Acquisition Agent to transport a subject from its point of origin to a designated Stasis Quarantine cell. Clause 4, Annex A of the Concordance of Acquisition stipulates that no formal acquisition may proceed without the contemporaneous annotation of an Acquisition Scribe. Their duties are enumerated in Annex C:

  1. Verification of the Agent’s commission and sigil.
  2. Recording the proposed Axiomatic Foundation for the acquisition.
  3. Notarizing the dimensional and ontological stability readings taken at the point of origin.
  4. Affixing the Scribe’s own sigil alongside that of the Agent, creating a binding chain of custody.

Upon the subject’s arrival in the Tower, the Scribe is further required to file a Final Acquisition Report with the DAA, which triggers the deaccessioning review process for the subject’s previous, non-Tower context.

Qualifications and Training

Prospective Acquisition Scribes undergo a seven-year apprenticeship under a senior scribe attached to the Bureau. The curriculum emphasizes bureaucratic precision, sigil-drafting, and a thorough grounding in the Axioms of Acquisition. A common point of scholarly contention is whether expertise in the subject matter being acquired is necessary. The Scribes of the Erroneous Premise argue it is indispensable for accurate axiomatic selection, while the Bureau’s operational manuals maintain that procedural fidelity is paramount and that subject expertise is the domain of later cataloguing Scribes for Auditable Process.

Sigil Protocols

Each Acquisition Scribe is issued a unique, self-modifying sigil upon certification. This sigil is not merely an identifier but an active authenticator. When applied to a docket, it interacts with the Agent’s sigil and the proposed Axiomatic Foundation, producing a cryptographic proof of concordance. Discrepancies between the selected axiom and the subject’s observed properties cause the sigils to repel each other, a phenomenon known as “ink-shed,” which immediately invalidates the docket. The protocols governing sigil creation and decommissioning are detailed in the now-lost Appendix Ω of the Concordance, leading to periodic authentication crises overseen by the DAA.

Notable Controversies

The most significant controversy involving Acquisition Scribes concerns the “Grey Annex Incidents” of Cycle 7,421. A faction within the Conclave of Scribes, later identified as the Scribes of the Internal Sea, argued that the very act of documenting an acquisition for the Tower fundamentally altered the subject, rendering the docket a record of a transformation, not a retrieval. They proposed that Acquisition Scribes should therefore be reclassified as Cartographer-Scribes of ontological drift. The Third Concordance explicitly rejected this reclassification in Amendment 742, but the philosophical debate persists in academic circles on Floor 14,307 (“The Unmoved Debating Hall”).

Relationship to Other Scribe Orders

Acquisition Scribes occupy a distinct, intermediary position in the Tower’s documentary ecosystem. Their work begins the cataloguing chain but does not complete it. The validated docket is passed to Measurer-Scribes for dimensional cataloguing, and eventually to Master Scribes for final entry into the archive. This linear chain is, however, idealized; in practice, disputes over axiomatic foundations often require re-consultation with the original Acquisition Scribe, creating a complex web of cross-referenced responsibility documented by the Guild of Ephemeral Scribes. Their authority is considered subordinate to that of the Scribes of the Still Point only in matters pertaining to acquisitions within chronologically frozen sectors.
